10-Minute Match | Star-Studded Spain Sink Socceroos | 2014 World Cup
2014 World Cup: Spain Sign Off With a Win as Australia Exit With Credit
This 10-minute match package revisits Spain vs Australia in the final round of Group B at the 2014 World Cup. Spain win their farewell game with goals from David Villa, Fernando Torres and Juan Mata, and the commentary frames it as the end of Spain's golden generation and perhaps of tiki-taka, while insisting their six-year run of three major titles should not be diminished.
- Australia can leave with credit: they were brave, gutsy and unlucky — Their young squad showed plenty of good things in Brazil, and as group outsiders their two defeats felt almost like mini victories.
- Spain's Brazil campaign could hardly have gone worse after it was meant to be a glorious send-off — They came in as reigning world champions with huge names and reputations but went out early.
- David Villa's goal was a cheeky, audacious way to sign off — He is Spain's record World Cup scorer, took his finals tally to nine, and finished with real verve.
- Spain only showed occasional glimpses of their old selves in the first half — There were flashes of the old Spain through Iniesta, Cazorla and Villa, but they had only one goal at the break.
- Spain's second goal showed that the old Spanish style and swagger were still there in flashes — Iniesta produced a delicious through ball and Torres, one of the old guard, applied the finish.
- Spain's win was a convincing farewell even though it meant nothing in World Cup terms — Mata finished calmly, and Spain signed off with a performance that gave their fans goals and something to take home.
- Tiki-taka may have run its course at this level, and this game felt like its epitaph and farewell — Spain's reign is over, and the commentator questions whether this style can still work at this level.
- The end of Spain's reign should not diminish the greatness of their six-year run of three major titles — They won two Euros and one World Cup, and the commentator wonders whether we will see such a team and squad again.
Spain and Australia met for the first time ever in the last round of Group B fixtures at FIFA World Cup 2014. The final day in Group B, and this is where both Australia and the outgoing world champions Spain bid Brazil 2014 goodbye. Australia, brave, gutsy, unlucky. So many good things shown by their young squad here in Brazil. Always Group B's outsiders, the manner of their two defeats has been such they felt like mini victories. Compare that to Spain, winners of three successive major trophies. Brazil was meant to be a glorious send-off for huge names with colossal reputations. It could not have gone more wrong for the Spanish. Away will come Santi Cazorla here for Spain. Involves Iniesta. Iniesta Santi Cazorla, and now David Villa. Villa, Santi Cazorla. In the way was Alex Wilkinson for Australia. Well, Spain's first goal attempt, and Cazorla found in the way there the Aussie center back was in no mood for being breached. Mat Ryan's clean sheet intact so far. The Aussies just one clean sheet in their World Cup history back in their debut year, '74 against the Chileans in their final group game then, goalless in that match in West Germany. Here goes Iniesta. Iniesta still. LOOKS FOR DAVID VILLA! WELL, GIVEN HIS RECORD, given his World Cup goals tally down the years, that was more than half a chance for the Spanish. David Villa will be in Australia in the A-League next season. Torres. Torres turns smartly. Fernando Torres and Villa's backheel touch for Jordi Alba. Jordi Alba, Ryan with a parry and away will come the Socceroos now in full flow with Matthew Leckie. Ball back with Spain though smartly. Ryan with the block and it stays goalless for now in these two teams' last Group B match. Cazorla, great ball to get Villa away here. In the middle, Torres arriving at pace. It's David Villa. And Villa's ball in, oh, and across the face and no one there got a touch in a black shirt. Torres and Koke in the middle were the two who were in there in contention, but it found neither of them. Out towards Juanfran. >> [cheering] >> Iniesta, oh, lovely ball here for Juanfran. JUANFRAN, DAVID VILLA, OH, GREAT FINISH! GREAT FINISH FROM Spain's best ever scorer of World Cup goals. Nine now in the finals. His first for 2014 and the man who'll play in Australia next season for Melbourne City with the most cheeky, audacious of finishes has the outgoing world champions in front. Iniesta's ball was an absolute dream. Juanfran and David Villa applies the finish with real verve. A well-taken goal. Spain's first here in open play in this World Cup. Going home, yes, but they go home here with a goal which is a picture. David Villa and Spain in front. >> [cheering] [cheering] >> Besinic with a challenge and it's going to be called back here for the foul on Santi Cazorla. For the Spanish it's a quick free kick two taken to Koke. And Koke from long distance. It's behind for a corner. And the early ball again is here meant to set to Villa away but give Ryan top marks there for the sweeper keeper's job super header. Koke here finds Iniesta. Villa. Space here NOW FOR SANTI CAZORLA. And hooked away by the defender Wilkinson. One or two glimpses glimmers of the old Spain in this first half. Just the one goal so far. Half time in Group B Australia nil Spain one. What a change here symbolic to the maybe end of an era. Coming off is David Villa today's score and Spain's all time record and record World Cup scorer. Now 32 is this the end of him on this stage. One of the all time greats for Spain and in World Cup finals. His goal today not a bad way to sign off is it? Thanks for the memories David Villa. Well read by Davidson though here he will try and release Matthew Leckie's pace. >> [cheering] >> Leckie. and Tommy Oar's control was a little heavy. Allowed Ramos the chance to get the ball clear, which he has done. >> [cheering] >> Bozanic takes the corner towards Halloran here. And the volley from McKay wasn't quite in the Tim Cahill locker, was it? But nonetheless, the man who's scored just once down the years for the Socceroos, this was a lovely clean connection. The talk was this week over Fabregas Del Bosque bust-up, maybe not. Here he comes on to replace Santi Cazorla. Juan Mata Iniesta. Oh, great ball here. FERNANDO TORRES. TORRES IN. ANOTHER OF THE OLD GUARD, THE OLD school for Spain, has got their second goal today. Glimmers today, flashes of the old Spanish style, the old Spanish swagger. Once again there, the goal made by a delicious, sumptuous Iniesta through ball. Torres applies the finish. His first World Cup goal since the Germany finals of 2006. And the man who's goal began this Spanish run, the winner in the Euro final of 2008, has maybe scored a goal here in the end-of-an-era game at this World Cup in 2014. Fernando Torres makes it Australia nil, Spain two. Troisi. Troisi with a shot. What a goal. Reina's not been troubled too much in the Spanish goal today, but may have been caught cold here on target. It is being a shot on target from James Troisi. >> [cheering] [cheering and applause] >> Fabregas sees Jordi Alba's made the surge. He's found him, as well. >> [cheering] >> Iniesta It's Cesc Fabregas. And here's Juan Mata. Mata It doesn't matter in the World Cup context, but Spain here signing off with at least a display to give their fans some goals, some points, something to take home and cling on to. Deposed as world champions, but it's a a sign-off win, and a convincing one of that. Juan Mata through the goalkeeper's legs. >> [cheering] >> He starts here onside. And the finish was composed and calm, and it was perfect in a World Cup which has been for Spain anything but. >> [cheering] >> Three lovely, neat, tidy tiki-taka goals. This the epitaph, the farewell to tiki-taka, maybe. A game style which has perhaps run its course at this level. But thanks for the memories. Here's David Silva, bouncing ball. It bounces the wrong side for Spain, off Ryan's post. >> [cheering] >> And the reign of Spain is officially over. Del Bosque's men deposed as the world champions going home early. It should not though ever ever detract from six remarkable years. Two Euros, one World Cup. Will we ever see this team, this squad's like again?
