ESPN FC Extra Time: Lisandro apology, Mourinho comments, UCL picks and mid-season camps
This Extra Time episode focuses on Lisandro Martinez's apology, Mourinho's controversial post-match comments about his starters and substitutes, a Champions League semi-final prediction, and mid-season bonding camps. The panel says an apology must be sincere and Mourinho's remarks should be taken with a pinch of salt; they pick Bayern Munich as the most likely other semi-finalist. On bonding trips, they call them part socialising and part incentive to win the next game.
- Lisandro Martinez should apologise only once, but it has to be sincere; his apology was not convincing. — He went around the houses and only said he maybe should not have said it, rather than coming out and being sincere.
- Michael Carrick is in a hole because of Lisandro Martinez; Carrick should play him and demand a performance to earn back trust rather than simply dropping him. — If United got hammered while Lisandro sat on the bench, it would look bad for Carrick.
- Mourinho's post-match comments were shocking, but they should be taken with a pinch of salt because his changes won the game; he was mainly protecting the starting XI from criticism. — The substitutes made the difference and the starters deserved criticism for their performance.
- If PSG, Barca and Arsenal make the Champions League semi-finals, Bayern Munich are the most likely other qualifier. — No detailed reason was given; the panel agreed unanimously.
- Mid-season bonding camps are mostly about beer and socialising, not serious tactical work; any training is just for show so the club can justify the trip. — They took kit, balls and bibs, but there were no tactics or double sessions, just a little jog and stretch before going out.
- Mid-season bonding trips work because everyone knows they must give everything in the next game; if they do not win, there will be no more trips. — He cannot remember his team losing after a break, because the players put everything in to protect the next trip.
- For his newly promoted, already safe team, league form could be secondary; the focus was on team bonding and winning the FA Cup. — They were safe, on a good FA Cup run, and the league had mattered less for a while.

Welcome in to the latest edition of Extra Time. Chef Stevie, I was dying to say John Hutcherson here. >> You know the Infantino stuff we talked about on the show. >> We did talk about Infantino's apology to the FIFA council. >> Well, I couldn't stop thinking about it because Seth Blad endorsed him. You must been in No, don't I don't want you to don't endorse me. >> He'd be like, no, not you. >> What you talking about his blat's recent statement? >> Yeah. Oh, that was sarcastic. He was being sarcastic. >> No. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. >> I thought he was serious. >> No, no, no. Seb Blat has been very critical of infantic. >> I thought he was being I was being very sarcastic trying with religion and Yeah. >> Oh, well, he's Well, he's actually doing him a favor then. >> No, no, but he's gone we've gone from one to the complete opposite. >> Well, when when when sat is criticizing you for decisions made, you know decision. You know that's a low bar. >> While we are on the subject of apologies. First question, Don. Since you're famous for dealing with numbers, what is the perfect number of apologies to make? This isn't about obviously Infantino. This is Lisandro Martinez base by the looks of it. >> One, but make it a good one. I mean, he wasn't really convincing, was he? I mean, he went around the houses a little bit. Maybe I shouldn't have sort of said that, which I apologize for. Uh, I just think you come out and just just be sincere. I mean, what I would say from from Michael Carrick's point of view is Landre Martinez has put Michael Carrick in a right hole because if this was a if this was a normal game and it's leads away, so it's not a normal game. You might discipline him. You might find him two weeks wages and say, "By the way, you're not playing in the next game. You dropped." If he'd done that, Michael Carrick and Man United got waloped and Lando Martinez is sitting on the bench. It's not going to be a good look for Michael. So, he better pray. Or you could reverse psychology if if you're Michael and say, "Right, you're playing, but put in a performance and make sure the apology is done on the pitch." And that's how you can repay getting my trust back in and earning the trust again of the fans. Put in a performance and win. >> Did Did Don just say you can reverse psychology it? >> Yep. You know, I was thinking there I was thinking of the reverse. I was thinking of the reverse reverse and I went for psychology. >> I love it. You can reverse psychology. >> We're going to use that. >> Oh boy. That is >> I bet you can somehow you can. >> That was good. Oh boy. >> Reverse psychology in it. How would you feel as a player or how would you as a player feel if you came off the bench to help your team win the match and then hear your manager say that they would have lost 5-nil had heeded his starting 11 of players who were on the pitch at the final whistle which is what Mourinho did after the match. He did do this say this after >> I'm laughing because I when he said it I was like oh god what a thing to say. Listen, on the one hand, you won the game >> and the changes helped you win the game >> and you know the changes make all the difference. So, you know, let if I'm entering for argument sake, I I know Marin is just saying that to try to um kind of protect the starting 11 from from criticism that that they deserved. Any criticism that starting 11 got that sort of training room as as they did was fully deserved. Um, but you win the game, everybody's happy, everybody's excited. So, you take that you take Mourinho's comments with with that handful of salt. >> All right. >> Half the dum dums don't even think about football. The half of the team that actually think about football will understand 100%. What Mourinho's saying, the other half that dum dums who just play and don't think about anything, they they they're like that. were >> reverse psychology in the dum dums. This is already an epic edition of extra time. If we assume PSG, Barca, and Arsenal make the Champions League semi-finals, who's the most likely other qualifier? >> Bayern Munich. >> Yep. >> Yeah. >> Yep. >> Yep. >> Yep. Yep. All right. >> You want to give it, >> Stevie? What will it take for a sideways fake Rabona stepover to be called a Yamal? I see kids attempting it at local fields in Brooklyn. >> Well, the only thing I can think of is that it must be something that somebody's done before. Otherwise, you know, all of these all of these different things like the crow turn, nobody had done it. And so that's why it was cro tongue cuz he was the only guy. >> Who done that? Who's done that? >> Have you seen your mouth? Well, I I don't think I have, but as I said, I I would assume somebody else has done it. Otherwise, it would already have been called a Yal >> D. >> Well, here's one for you. So, I was watching the game live and my lad who's 10, Douggee, who's in a different room. I went, Douggee, come and watch this bit of skill that your mal done. And then Douggee watched it and went, "What the Joe Cole?" And I went, "Is that what it's called?" He went, "Yeah." He went, "It's called the Joe Cole." So, when they do training, apparently Joe Cole done it. So, it's actually nicknamed the Joe Cole. >> Oh, no. We're not We're not friends with Joe Cole on the show tonight. Did you not get the memo, Don? >> Oh, well, I am. I am. I think I think Joe wasn't very nice about Chef. He's >> a very very good judge. >> It's true, though. >> He's a very good judge of character, Joey. Joey knows what he's talking about. >> And a good judger goalkeeper. >> Yeah, I wasn't I wasn't bastard. I don't care what anybody says. >> Does Shaka have any tips for Usman Dembele when he's requesting all these holidays throughout the season from Luis Enrique? Also, does Shaka feel like he's better on the show the day after vacation? >> Uh, okay. Well, in terms of uh this man, when you are planning for your holidays, you've got to get in early, well ahead of time because otherwise Stevie and Craig and Alli off somewhere and then you can't get >> it's all planning. >> Yeah, you got to plan well ahead. You got to think like I've already booked my time off for Carnival. That's next year. >> That's what you got to do, man. Um, and I wasn't Am I better after after holidays? Nope. No sir. Listen, when I when I go on holiday, I'm on holiday. I I'm holidaying it. >> You sleep before holidays, during holidays, and after. >> And after holidays. Yeah. I'm I I'm not watching football. Um I am paying no attention to what's happening in the world. And then I just come and >> it's just a normal day. >> Come and reverse. Come and reverse psychology. >> Reverb to reverse psychology. >> I got to reverse psychology when I'm walking in reverse. >> But let me tell you, that's the best phrase I've ever heard in my life. >> Oh, we could we could call we could call that. >> It's called the hutch. >> I was about to say we call that done hutches. >> Yeah. There you go. >> Yeah. >> I'm just waiting for the extra time. Next question that has that name at the top. You know it's fun. >> Okay. Here's here's the last one from Dan Summeran. Oh, we're going to mention Dan in a minute as well. >> Roberto Deserby took the Tottenham team to Marba for a team bonding camp this week. Did any of you go on a mid-season camp during your playing day? >> Did we ever >> tell us about it, Stevie? >> Um, >> or them. >> It the second part bonding. It started with a B and it was called beer and that was it. That was the that was the team bonding. Everybody get out together and and get on it. That was it. We we actually I don't know you could call it training cuz you had to you had to take the kit and take the balls and take the bibs so that the higher ups could see that you were actually doing something in order to justify paying for the trip. But yeah, there was no there was no tactics. There was no more twice a days. It was a little jog in the stretch and uh let's get out. >> But you like these little team bundles. >> The only midseason break I I come I went on like this was my last year 0506. >> Um I'm trying to remember if it was just before the FA Cup semi-final just after uh Alan Paradu took us all out to to Dubai. Um but then so at at this point we are firmly focused on on on the final um on league form. We're doing we're doing all right in the league to to be fair. And then once we kind of went on this cup run league just took second place. So we went out to to Dubai in between in between two two league games. Um trained out there. It was hot as anything. Um slight dehydration didn't help. >> Oh yeah. Yep. >> Not enough electrolytes or something else. Shaka. >> Yeah. >> For bonding. >> But here's here's the rules though >> for bonding. >> And I'm sure it's the same way every team is. >> The only rule you have is that the next game every single person has to give every single thing because if you don't win the game after you've been away on a break, the brakes get chopped off. So everybody's like, "Right, you make sure every every last one of us gives every single thing we have today." And I can't remember us ever losing a game, having come back from a break because that was it. Cuz we knew we had to we had to at least if you didn't win, you didn't get beat and you had to put it all in because if you didn't, then there wouldn't be another trip. >> Yeah. We >> So generally it worked out well. >> We didn't care. We we were focused on on on the cup fin. It was just it really was just a bonding session in in in that regard. Um and then you know as I said the league form really was secondary and had been for for a little while. We were safe. Team was newly promoted. We were safe. Went on this great FA Cup run. This was just about team bonding. League form didn't matter. Let's let's try to win this FA Cup. And we all know how that went. >> Yeah. Moving on. Don how we are trips team building bonding exercises. I mean, I I wondered where Stevie was going when he went to start with a B. Um, but honestly, crazy ones. Crazy ones. I mean, I remember going to Howard Kendall with Everton to to Greece in a nightclub and I don't know how this happened. I haven't got a clue how it happened, but there was a fella on a stage with a yellow snake around his neck and by the end of it, Duncan Ferguson had the snake around his neck in a nightclub on the stage and it was just like, which is brilliant. And then Peter Reed done one where we went to Edinburgh. There's a place in Edinburgh called the grass market which is like this area bit like Newcastle sort of um big market where there's just bars everywhere in the grass market. And Rey being Rey was like sort of half shrewd and clever. And he went just make sure you all bring your golf clubs cuz you can tell the wives it's a golfing trip. Bring your golf clubs and put them on the coach. They never got used some trip but we've loads. I mean I mean end of season one with West Ham I don't think no Shaka wasn't on that. It was the first time I was at West Ham in 95 and we went to Bondi Beach in Australia for a month at the end of the season and it was the best I was a young lad. It was the best month of my life sitting on Bondai Beach every single day. Four weeks of it >> sounds not bad at all. >> I don't think I could have got away with that. full reason. >> Wife may have a problem. >> Take the golf clubs. She's the big >> boy. Couple of things we want to get to before we say goodbye. >> Bit of reverse psychology. >> Yeah. Check your red pin today. >> Yes, I'm I'm I'm wearing Well, what red? I I do have today is uh wear red day for sure red card. It's a annual day of of action around anti-racism and allyship where we wear red and invite people to to kind of show who they are as a community and the things they stand for. Um, it's been a huge success over the years and and a day that we are very very proud of. >> Brilliant stuff and another day to be proud of for Dan Thomas and a day for us all to be happy. Here it is one year since his liver transplant. So, he got to ring the bell today and we love to see it. >> I hope he's not going to die tonight. Oh boy. >> Now he's he's definitely been on his best behavior. >> Unlike you, lot on your mid-season camps. >> Well, I was just I was just dehydrated. That's all I said. >> Brilliant stuff to see. Great stuff from Dan. All right, that is all we've got time for on the latest edition of Extra Time. Make sure to join us on ESPNFC. We've got a packed weekend and a big weekend in La Liga to enjoy.
