said it's not a tragedy, but he knew that he would be under pressure. He knew from the beginning of preseason when they didn't play particularly well in those two games um that they played against I think it was um Burnley and West Ham if I remember rightly they they didn't play particularly well then. He knows that he's a figure that is if is if you like the kind of the the man that's in the firing line whenever things don't go well and you said that they had that fall off last year which they really did. They went 18 games at one point last season without a victory. >> And because of that run, if we've learned anything about Manolo um since he's been Espanol manager is the fact that he can take it. He can take the pressure. Um as you say, he was a a little bit nervy in the the pre-match um interview, but he's stood his ground last season. Um always confident that things will turn out okay and he kept his job, but when many people thought he absolutely would not. >> Yeah. And people thought they he absolutely would not. of course because the change of ownership of the club because the arrival of Munchie as a new sporting director of feeling that well Munchie will want his own people but Mchi was very very clear very early and I think it was important that he was clear from the start in saying no Manolo is the coach Manalo is the person I'm behind now that doesn't mean that that's permanent and that changes don't come but at that point I think it was an important vote of confidence >> well good atmosphere inside the stadium 30,000 season tickets coming into this season for Espanol so much expectation uh the expectation on the shoulders of these players There's uh Kuchi Romero Hansko and Danny Martinez comes in at left back. Juliano Barios Hman and Kangin Lee across the middle with Lookman up front with Jonathan David. Um but his opposite number if you like. Um Jonathan David, you can say the same about him. We're underway. Espanol kicking from left to right as we look and that long ball forward towards Roberto goes out for a goal kick. >> And Danny Martinez there seeing it out of play. He's playing just his second game in La Liga this season. began that first game of the season against Malaga when Simeonyi played a whole load of young players. Obviously, Spain had just come off winning the World Cup. Atletico Madrid had players there in the final for playing for both Spain and Argentina. So, it was natural that there would be changes there. It's a slight slight surprise that he starts today, but I think it's about fitness. I think it's about rotation because Grimaldo has been playing extremely well for Atletico Madrid at left back. Um, but he is rested today. Yeah, they got stuck on Tuesday at Leti after as you said Sid that um win over Manchester United um in midweek you were there. The ball comes out to Danny Martinez laid off by Jonathan David and the early signs by the way are is that it's Kangan Lee that's the closest of the two Jonathan David. You can see him there just just coming into that kind of number 10 position asking for the ball. One over the top for Jonathan Davis. Cut out by Cabrera. Cabrera, one of the great survivors. We well I had certainly written him off about four three seasons ago when Espanol went down. He's still there at the heart of their defense. He's under pressure here as is the team as that one is floated over the top. >> You were talking about writing um writing off Caba. I'll be honest, I've been pleasantly surprised precisely by the start of the season of Kang. That is very very close. He's given given more. He would start in midfield today for precisely the reason you said that Bariel's knees may be protecting. >> Yeah, it's a slight surprise that he didn't. >> They're in here. It's a decent cross. It's a good finish as well. Clipped just over the top by Jonathan David and picking out Jonathan David. Well, it's not enormously dissimilar to the opening chance for for Kangin in the sense that these are moves where the the chance has been carved out that there's been patience, there's been um Christian make the challenge, drop it off. Nothing flash, nothing clever. >> Here's Kangin goes for goal and Fortuna makes his first save of the afternoon from Kangin's effort. >> Here's Ali. >> Open up for Kenya. I just wonder if he might have had an option just to the left of him. So he's got Jonathan David going to the right. I think there's a player alongside him. We can't see him in that replay. There's possibly an option to his left rather than taking the shot on. But it it opens up well enough that you can understand why he would take it on. >> Two goals already. Kangin Lee for Atletico Madrid. Here's Ed's positive under pressure from Barios >> games at left back this season. That obviously would then require someone like Robin Lenman to come in at central defense. Eli Lai back to Vana. Loops that one up for Javier Hernandez. The ball out for an espanol throw. And >> obviously the other thing of course is that today we're seeing Markville play at right back but he would naturally be more likely to play at central defense >> when when Marco Sharent is available for right back. >> Well the throw took too long took too long to take the throw. So now it's going to do well. >> Well, it's created a bit of atmosphere for the for the first. >> Yeah, they didn't like it. The supporters inside the RCD stadium exposing where Brian Zaros is. He's right in front of you. He's played that out to Javier Hernandez. Javandez with the clever cross to the back post and no one attacking the space. Pub has to chest the ball out for a a corner and that has lifted the stadium. >> Curious, isn't it? The way a game can maybe not turn because it was a bit early to say that but the way a game can feel different because of a throw in. >> Daragosa with the cross. Cabrera very close to getting on the end of it. It's gone out for a goal kick. Suddenly Es >> a throw that gets taken off you. You create half a chance. You win a corner. You put the ball in and then you create very definitely a real chance. It's not a great sign is it? I mean it's you know it's a slip of the tongue no more than that but it was it was kind of quite indicative and he wasn't playing a huge amount to start with but I think once he started to play him you know that his performance levels were so good that he got a place at the World Cup and I think deservedly so playing this role where sometimes he's at central defender sometimes at right back obviously with Marcus Shenti available at central defender but I think he's been very very good indeed bit of pressure applied to Janob black there he still managed to find Juliano that's nicely done by Pubil across to Romero Hansko Humeman into Barios tries to thread that through for Jonathan David. It comes out to Julian. Juliano. Juliano has found Jonathan David. And Jonathan David with a real opportunity there for Atletico Madrid. And he came very close to giving them the lead >> by Fortuno. In fact, if it hits the base of the post, >> I think it might. In fact, I think it might even be an even better save than the first four cuz I thought he just blocked it, but I actually think it's a left hand. Coming in Juliano Simeone into the area, drops for Hansco. Lookman blazes over played off by Jonathan David. Another Atletico Madrid corner. Again, it's a similar sort of pattern, isn't it? Using the ball, trying to find the space, trying to find a way through. Espanol may well feel that they're doing a very good job of not allowing Atletico Madrid to get those very clear shots off, but I think Atletico would look at the list of opportunities. Um, you know, Kangin after a minute, Jonathan David after 5 minutes, you've had Kangin shot again on 18. You know, Danny Martinez, they will feel that they've probably done enough to suggest that they they could have found a way through by now. Corn was taken short. Barios came in with a cross. Headed away by Roberto. Another opportunity for Barrows to put it into the area. Cleared to Roberto. Tried to find Brian Zaragosa. Now Brian Zaragraph has the ball at his feet and that creates a little bit of expectation inside the RCD stadium. And he's gone past uh Kangyan Lee and Kang Lee gets a yellow card. >> Yeah, >> Kangyan Lee absolutely everywhere including at the right back. >> Yeah, it's not where you expect to see him. >> No complaint opportunity this for for Espanol. >> Cross drops inside the sixyd box. Comes out to the EDGE OF THE AIR OFF THE CROSSBAR. Still alive. Roberto in the end with a header and it goes wide. Well, what an opportunity that was for from the edge of the area. >> Kang in takes the corner. >> Kuba got closest to getting something on it. Goes out for a throw. Well, late goals were um a feature for both these teams last weekend. There's no time added onto the 45 because of course Espanol were winning against Malaga. Always talk about with him is that his shooting from mid distance is very good from around the edge of the area. And if you're only being allowed to progress as far as the edge of the area to have someone like Paul who can turn and get a shot off quickly, maybe gives you an opportunity there. And obviously that's the other thing about Grimmaldo. Grimmaldo will create. He will combine and he can also shoot. >> I said his last goal was against Madrid. It wasn't. It was against Ova. >> Yeah, but that doesn't count. We we're we we're selective amnesia. We are not remembering that. Yeah, >> it was um it was back in February. So, it's a long long time since Julian Alvarez hit the back of the net. He scored at this stadium um on the first day of last season against Espanol and he's been called upon at the break because Atletico are dominating here, but they're still not ahead. Yeah, you wonder as well if if if Atletico still find themselves in a position where they're not finding a way through in sort of 15 20 minutes or so whether there might be a temptation to bring on Marco Shredde and double up that athleticism on the right hand side have him and Juliano both going Espan. Now, it's harder to do that when the other team is waiting for you and there isn't any space to run into, but to go at them and then of course that would probably go hand inhand with a removal of one of the central defenders and that Paul Biliva becomes a central mid defender or is removed from right back and Yende takes his place. >> Grimaldo back to Couti Romero. >> And as much as anything else, you just wonder if if what Simeone will really want from Atletico Madrid is an acceleration. Same sort of thing, but quicker, a little bit more aggressive. Peru expos goes to Reedle. Still the line of three central defenders with Vanier and Cabreri the side of Rel. Omar Elili and Roger Inino are the wing backs. Expositor and Paulo in midfield and Roberto flanked by Brian Zaragosa and Javier Hernandez. And this is Javier Hernandez driving into space. Roberto ahead of him. He gets the shot away. It took a deflection corner for Espanol. >> Jonathan David and Juliano Simeone in the middle. Here's Grimmaldo. Back it goes to Julian. Kang Lee. Chance for Urenti. URENTI HITS IT BRILLIANTLY OFF THE CROSSBAR. I think Fortunho pushed it onto the frame of the goal. Second time in the game. The crossbar at that and he's rattled. It was Cabrera in the first half. This time it's Urente almost his first league goal of the season. >> I think you're right. >> It's Kangin Lee. So Bayena replaces >> Kangin Lee. staying on the pitch but changing their position. So Jurente has gone from the bench to central midfield to right back. You know that obviously has an impact on the players around you as well. >> And that shot count is not going up as quickly as Simeone would have liked it to have done in the second half. I >> think it was already at 10 at halftime. It's only at 12 now. Mendulsa. Julian Alvarez. Bayern wants it played into the area. Here's Mendula. Urente. Urente with the cross. Cleared by Elili. only as far as human hits it well but uh whistles past the right hand upright of >> I think it's a good well the clock keeps on ticking doesn't it keeps on rolling >> yeah not too far away from just 15 minutes being left here but there's a chance of Jonathan David maybe got something on that for you made an excellent save he comes out for Omar Elli to clear he doesn't get distance on the clearance Bayer Mendulsa back out to Julian Alvarez. Alvarez away from Paulano. Grimaldo. Grimaldo over hits the cross. It's cleared by Ruer Inoo. Here's Jurente. Another example I thought on that last chance for Jonathan David of just the slight lack of acceleration that he's got that kind of pass. just a a fraction quicker off the mark and maybe he would have got there. >> Dente into Juliano Simeone. >> Julian Alvarez. JULIAN ALVAREZ HITS IT AND IT'S tipped over the top. Ability from around these kind of positions to get a shot off. >> Yeah, there's nothing on there, is there? and he makes >> and it's and it with him it's it's the it's the slight shift one way or the other and then get the shot off quickly. It's about the speed of getting the shot off and now obvious was a semicomfortable save but it's forced a corner which Grimmaldo will take into the near post and the header into the side netting from Hman. One of the few who hasn't scored yet this season but he made good contact with that from Grimaldo which could steer at the right side of the post. >> Yeah. And this time you feel like onto the crossbar in the first half into the crossar in the second half. Still goalless. Julian Alvarez DANCES INTO THE PENALTY AREA AND SLIDES THAT WIDE. I'm not sure if courtesy of a of a Well, that was the moment when Alvarez could have won it for Atletico Madrid. Brilliant quick feet on the edge of the area and then it is a save from Fortunho. I think it's probably going wide anyway, but it but it's certainly true that's a demonstration of what we were talking about with Julian Alvareth. >> Jenti out to Bayer Bayer into the area. A chance for Hansco and the header from Puill over the top. >> Offside anywhere I think >> and the flag is raised. This may sound exaggerated and almost certainly is, but that pass from Mendotha from the short corner is the kind of thing that Simeone will not accept, will not forgive him for because it's it's so easy. It's so simple and yet the opportunity's wrong foot. It's two yards ahead of him. >> You're totally wasting an opportunity for a really really good delivery. >> Yeah. Well, the chances don't come around too often for Menotto. We mentioned when he came on that um hasn't played since the Sevilla game, match day three. Foul given against I can shepherd this back to uh Fortuna who goes long as possible with the clearance. It bounces nicely for Espanol. >> And there's a foul is there. Notices the referee. The ball was played. Out to Kalatra. Kalatraa with the cross. Headed away by Hansko. >> Urente being put under pressure by Polano. That was nicely done by Mendula. Calmly into Humeman. Humeman finds Jonathan David. Back with Mendulsa. That's another loose one though that puts Puil under pressure. Clad doing the chasing down. Uren clears Bayern. Hansko out to Grimaldo. Julian Alvarez does well, finds Bayern. BAYERN FROM THE EDGE OF THE AREA. THERE IT IS. BRILLIANT FROM JULIAN ALVAREZ. AND EVEN MORE BRILLIANT FROM BAYERN. IT'S HIS FIFTH GOAL OF THE SEASON. FINALLY, THE SUBSTITUTIONS DO THE TRICK. BAYERN RUNS to Simeone to celebrate. The Atletico away support join those celebrations. And once again, it's happened to Espay. Happened to them in their last game. They have conceded late on and this time it will mean surely that they lose this match. It's Espanol nil Atletico Madrid won >> and it came how did it come? It came with Espanol attacking. It came with the first time that Atletico Madrid were able to run into space. Now let's not exaggerate this because you still have a lot of Espanol players back but it opens up a little bit. Grimmaldo is able to get up and running. He's able to give it to Bayern on the edge of the area given a lot of space on the edge of the area because the the Espanol defenders who are back are a little bit too far back. and it's very something like that, but they they haven't won since the 12th of September. I think sometimes those those gaps obviously it's slightly false because we've had a very long international break, but I think emotionally it feels like it's a long time ago and and he knows that that you know he's the weakest link when it comes to making making changes. Five points it will be from eight games. Mendulsa also brought down free kicks up there to go Madrid. Well, we're saying that Roberto been through the walls. That's that's the look of a man who's been through the walls, isn't it? Kiki Garcia, who's not even playing, has been through the walls. Look how much he seems to be suffering. And One for Jonathan David to chase or hold up as he does. Lays it off for Bayer into Julian Alvarez. Another step on the road TO REDEMPTION. JULIAN ALVAREZ WITH A SHOT JUST PAST THE POST. WELL, that would have been a huge stride as we go into the last minute >> and another demonstration of of that ability to shift the ball out from underneath his feet and get a shot off before anyone can get way through the mass ranks at the back. Now for Atletico Madrid, there's a chance for Omar to cross. Omar crosses it. Almost dropped for Pu though. EDGE OF THE AREA. PAULO THROUGH THE CROWD and Oblak will have seen that very late and he pushes it away for a corner. >> I think as well I think Oblak might even have to sort of change the position of his arms here. >> Lefano met it at the near post. And there goes I think the fulltime whistle from Alejandro Hernandez. Hernandez and Bayern is so happy he's just hugged the referee. I think he's saying to him sorry for that that
