'They just gotta keep winning' 🗣️ Nedum Onuoha on Man City's PL dominace | ESPN FC
ESPN FC breaks down Manchester City's seven-from-seven Premier League start, with Nedum Onuoha saying the domestic results are reliable but the first 30 minutes against PSG are the bigger warning.
The panel discusses City's winning run, Haaland's scoring form, rotation and defensive concerns. Onuoha argues City just need to keep winning in the league, while the PSG performance worries him more than individual mistakes.
- City's domestic form is reliable even when the performances are not perfect, and they just have to keep winning — They keep putting points on the board and the expected goals showed today should have been a bigger win; the first 30 minutes against PSG were the exception.
- City's rotation and returning players are giving them good energy and confidence — Players rotated into the starting side and Foden returned after his red card against Manchester United; the energy and confidence on the field look good.
- Haaland is unstoppable — He scored in a sixth consecutive Premier League game, attacks the ball in the box with hunger, and for his second goal got to the ball ahead of the defender.
- Maresca should not complain about PSG being able to rotate when he made seven changes in the Premier League and still won comfortably — His team made seven changes and still won, and it should have been three, four or five, so he should think before speaking.
- The manager deserves credit and now looks like the right manager for the club — It was good to see an expensive young player get a feel for the Premier League again rather than relying only on academy kids, and after the Community Shield things seem to be turning.
- City's defence is not perfect, but the bigger concern is the PSG game because the setup and mentality were wrong and they were cut open — Against PSG they were completely outplayed for the first 30 minutes, with the press, midfield support and individual battles all wrong; today's mistakes looked more individual and fixable, and that defender does not normally make a lot of mistakes.
Steve Nicol, Ale Moreno and Nedum Onuoha join Kay Murray to discuss Man City's dominance in the Premier League this season and how the club is being so successful with everything surrounding them off the field. ✔️ Subscribe to ESPN Unlimited: https://plus.espn.com/ ESPN ESPNFC

Harland limping off there. Not the prettiest, but City did get the job done. Maresca says that Harland is okay. We hope so because Nam Manu is on right now and we don't want any more upset for Nadam. So, here's how things are looking in the table. It's been a brilliant start. Man City make it seven wins from seven games. Moresca seven from seven. The third team to begin a season in the Premier League that way after Chelsea in ' 05 06 and Liverpool of the 19/20 season as well. Good time, Stevie. We won't go back there. NAM's here right now. NAM, there might be plenty going on off the pitch, but on the pitch in the Premier League at least, Man City are very much getting the job done. Yeah, I'm glad you said in the Premier League because that first 30 minutes in midweek against Paris Sanjiman, maybe not so much, but yeah, domestically they're certainly getting the points on the board and some of the performances haven't been perfect, but the fact that they were able to sort of grind out results and that isn't necessarily what today was cuz on a different day they probably score more goals as you can see from the stats, expected goals and stuff like this. It shouldn't have been just a a win by one goal, but there were a couple of mistakes in there, you know, as we've spoken about. I think Mark Ghee's probably had a tough time with those two particular incidents, but I think for City, they just got to keep winning. And you know, that's what's what they managed to do at this moment in time. And I think for me as well, they start to make one or two changes and keeping some people involved. You know, getting Kovichic starting there. Badi getting a start after doing so well in midweek and Foden being back on the side since his red card against Manchester United last month. So yeah, the the energy on the field is good. The players are feeling confident and you know, hopefully they can keep that going. Yeah, speaking of confidence, Alle Erling Harland scoring in a sixth consecutive Premier League game. He is unstoppable. >> Yes, he is. And the way he attacks uh the ball inside the 18 box is like Stevie attacking a shepherd's pie. It is vicious. >> Yeah. >> It it just >> a sight to behold. >> Well, yes. >> There's only one winner. >> Yeah. And that's Stevie, not the shepherd spy. Uh the and and I can appreciate that because it for a player who has scored as many goals he's as he has, there's still a a hunger, a desperation. This is how I breathe. This is how I I live. This is this is what fuels me. This is what gets me out of bed every day, scoring goals. And that's why you attack the ball in the manner in which he does. And while in the second goal that he scores, the ball gets away from him. Again, there's a certain desire to get to that ball ahead of the defender. that hunger, that drive, you either have it or you don't. And he has plenty of that. There there are times in which Erling Highland seems to kind of go through the game without participating as much as maybe he would want to. But when it comes to attacking the ball inside that 18 yard box, he has all the energy, all the power, all the physical ability, all the assets, everything that you need in order to put the ball in the back of the net. but before he puts into the back of the net to get to the ball before the defender, ahead of the defender and that is work rate, that is desire, that is hunger. And again, as I said before, he has plenty of that. >> You know what I found interesting today? >> We're listening to Moresca during the week complaining about how PSG have got it so good >> that they can make changes. >> He made seven changes from his first team today and they won comfortably and Nam said it was only one in the end, but it should have been three, four or five. So just before you start opening your mouth, Marissa, just think on you made seven changes today in the Premier League and you were complaining three or four days ago how PSG have got it so easy. >> Yeah, what's he moouring about Nam so grumpy isn't he? Oh my goodness gracious me. No, I'm kidding. I think for me it was good to see some of those players get a run out and these aren't just you know academy kids these really expensive sers like Abuadi for example but to see him back in there to see him as an 18 19 year old go into that side get a feel for the Premier League again I think it's a it's a positive thing for him I think they've got a game against AK or Ike Athens on Tuesday which I'm sure they'll be recovering for now but I think for Mesa credit to him given what the conversations were like after that community shield game two months ago it seems like things are starting to turn and you know for him himself it feels feels like the correct manager for this club at this moment in time. >> Okay, let's talk about however some of the concerns right now. It wasn't the best day for Mark Ghee. We saw Ipsswitch still getting two goals against Man City. Obviously, you yourself have mentioned Naom the PSG game where goals were conceded. We don't even need to include Liverpool, sorry Steve, because they kept a clean sheet against them. But they are leaking goals Man City as well as scoring them. Naom is that a concern for you? Um, I'll be honest, after 30 minutes in the PSG game, all I was thinking was I think this might be maybe like a seven or eight nil and I thought where which bunker do I need to go to to try and avoid all the onslaught that's going to be happening. But I think the game today it's kind of two individual areas as such. I think for the first goal gi in the wrong position and as a consequence he can't really try and lean on the on the attacker cuz he'll probably get sent off. But the PSG game for that first 30 minutes they were completely outplayed. So the press wasn't right, the support behind in midfield wasn't right. And the individual b battles at the back weren't right as well. And then you go back to say that Sunland game conceding a three. I think the the hattick from Brian Robbie is the easiest hat trick I think we might have ever seen in Premier League history. It was almost like everything was a 1 v one or a tap in. So yes, it's not perfect at all. Not perfect at all. But I think for me the bigger concern realistically was the game um I think in midweek against Paris and Jaman because he kind of showed that the manager got the setup wrong. The players had the mentality wrong and they were completely sliced open. Today Ghee makes those two mistakes and I don't think he's somebody in my mind that makes a ton of mistakes anyway in the grand scheme of things. So I think he can address that. But moments like we saw in midweek against PSG, they're the ones that made me sort of hide behind the sofa just a little bit.
