ESPN FC Extra Time: Man United signings, Wirtz prediction, Vinicius contract and PSG's UCL outlook

This ESPN FC Extra Time Q&A covered several Premier League and Champions League topics. The panel was down on Manchester United's summer signings, called the Wirtz player-of-the-season prediction more far-fetched than United finishing top five, and questioned whether Vinicius and Mbappe can coexist well enough for Real Madrid to avoid regretting his new deal. They also backed PSG to remain UCL contenders despite Kvaratskhelia's injury, rated Yamal above Doue, and gave Brighton and United each a 25% chance of a top-five finish.

Welcome in to the latest edition of Extra Time. Shaka and Al are here in the studio. Don Hutcherson joining us too. First question, >> start bench or drop these games from entertaining to chaos. Barca v PSG, Bayern v Arsenal and Liverpool versus Villa. >> H go on D. >> So Villa Royale. >> Oh, sorry. Viral >> um uh start start PSG Barca bench buying Arsenal drop Liverpool Villa Lal >> I'm with Don that order. >> Mhm. >> All right. >> And and you know it I I agree with Don but I think what sold it for me is how dramatic he was with taking his glasses off. >> Yeah. >> That really it you and I I felt connected to that. It was like >> taking it seriously. >> Let me get my smart Let me get my smart glasses off. >> A lot of strength behind it. >> So it was >> Yeah. So it was like >> fact. >> Yes. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Grade each of Manchester United summer signings. Balaba, Santos, Tielemans, and Rashford. >> Oh boy. >> Oh, what's what's what's the uh what's the scale? >> Right. Zero to one. >> The glasses are back on for >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Oh, man. >> No, nobody's been good. >> Why don't we ask Why don't we ask Alexandro Martinez? He'll he'll give us a good uh outlook on the assigning. >> Oh, apparently we can also ask Lara Martinez. You would know too. >> We found out during the show today. >> Mhm. >> All I'm going to go is failing greed. There's no scale on this. No. None of them have been cut by any measure. >> I'll fail for you, Don. Bela will be good. But B labour will he'll come good. >> I I think I think he's top draw as a young kid launched into a Man United side that was struggling. He's only played a couple of games. He'll come good. >> All right. Um Al >> Don's preseason's predictions. Which was worse? Florian Verts player of the year on Manchester United top five. >> Oh boy. Oh. Oh. Oh. Well, uh, the answer is the leather jacket. >> Nothing like that. >> Um, >> Chelsea second. >> Um, I I think Florian Ver's player of the year. I mean, there was there was an argument to be made for Manchester United given where they finished last season, >> but given what we saw from Florians last season, there was no evidence to suggest that he was going to take that leap from struggling to player of the year. I think we'll be talking more about Manchester United than we will Florida and verse. But in terms of a prediction that was out of control. I think that was much more out of control than Manchester United finishing in where Don had it. >> Agree. >> Yeah, I I I agree. Listen, there's enough time in the season well for somebody to come in and do as Carrick did back in the last season and all of a sudden Manchester United come good surprisingly. >> Um here. >> No, no, no, no. One of these ones. No, no, no, no. It's going to happen again. this one. >> All right. Okay. Thank you, K. You're so kind. Right. Where where was I? Uh there's still time for somebody to come in, turn things around in Manchester United, whether with this team or they spend a whole heap of money in January. Who knows? For them to come close to top four at least. >> I can't see Florian coming close to player of the year. >> You the hands were going everywhere there, Shaq. >> You felt very passionate. >> I was I was involved. He knows >> you felt it good. I liked it. What's the matter with Vinnie? Will Madrid wind up regretting that huge contract extension? >> This is from Shaka's vacation planner. >> It's been a So, I'm surprised my vacation planner had had time to sign a question in. >> Well, I don't know why I enjoy more Shaka as vacation planner or give Shaq more vac. >> Either one is a winner. Um, hey, >> uh, I really thought that in him in Vinnie getting his contract that whatever reservations or whatever resentment he had about Kilian Mbappe being there and him getting all the attention that that was sort of going to go away and he would focus more on being the player that we think he can be consistently. uh a productive player, a difference maker, an impactful player. But we have seen Vinnie Jr. struggle in the areas that are largely what make him a good player. One v one situations. Don't see him taking on players as much. Has a tendency now to just cut to the inside, look for the shot. If it doesn't happen, then he's just playing the ball backwards. It tells me there's a player that is lacking a little bit of confidence and still hasn't quite figured out what his role is while Kean Mbappe is on the field. I don't think it's a coincidence that if you go back to last season, Vinnie's best games with Real Madrid were when Kilian Mbappe was out injured or was not on the field or was absent, whatever the case may have been. When he was not on the field, Vinnie then becomes the guy and feels like the guy, feels that love, feels that responsibility and plays better. either he figures out how to play with Kilan Mbappe and understand that there is a role for him to participate in this team and to find what that role is or Real Madrid to answer the question and um the vacation planner um yeah I I think Real Madrid are going to try to figure out like wait a minute what have we done here we thought we had an answer and now the answer is not quite what we thought it was and if the team doesn't win which is more important than everything else then You start looking at reasons as to why they're not winning. And one of those reasons may just be that that relationship is not working. >> Okay. And I like the next name as well, Murray's Middlesbrough Americans or his promo push. >> But I'm going to put it to you, Don. How big of a blow is Cavar Skellier's injury? Are PSG still favorites for you? >> Uh, massive blow. I I mean, I've done an ACL and it's horrific. That'll be his season gone. um you're looking at 9 10 months. So yeah, I think there's an argument to say the last 18 months he's been one of the best or in the conversation is was one of the best wingers in world football. So it' be a massive miss. I think the thing with PSG is they've got you they've got the serious options. Um Dway can step into that position and be just as good. But the thing that he does I think better than anyone else Gravit Skeleia is he works back and he puts his foot in. He does the defensive side of the work for all those attacking players and he's one of them himself. He's the perfect example off the back of the Vinnie Jr. chat there where he is just willing just to go, do you know what? If I've got to work back and run back 50 yards, I'll do it. If I got to tackle people, I'll do it. Then I'll take players on and I'll score goals and I'll be brilliant. So, I feel for him. Anyone that I see with an ACL, haven't been there myself, I feel for him. He he'll be back, but this season this season will be gone, I'm afraid. But PSG favorites, yes or no? >> Champions League to make it three. Yeah, >> I think everyone Yeah, I think everyone's got to get to their level. Yeah, I >> I do I do have a hypothetical question for Shaq and we saw Don today with the glasses and now he gave us the prognosis for Kavarascadia given his experience. So, do would you trust more Don doing your taxes because we know math is is an issue for him or will you trust him being your doctor? Dr. Don >> or CPA Don. >> No, I I'll go CPA Don >> because CPA Don I'll end up in prison. >> Nice. >> Dr. dog. >> Oh boy. >> Are they still favorites for you even with him as your tax man? >> Who? >> CSG. >> Oh, they're at Scalia now that he's out for the season. >> Yes, they are. They're They're still They're still favorites for me. Never mind that. That is not the definitive list. The power rankings is where everything is at and still top of the power rankings. So, they >> top of your power rankings in a game they were still able to use him in. This is the game they lost him in. >> Is it going to change now? Sh. >> Don't complicate it. >> I won't I won't complain. >> They're not top of the bookies list. >> Okay. Don't don't don't bring facts into the conversation in discussing Shaka's power rankings. He's he tell keeps telling us that it's an algorithm, but I think it's it's more feel than anything else. >> Next week, >> next week to your point, Gabe, there'd be a different price, but this week it's PSG. >> All right. Well, while we're on PSG >> last week, last week gave a lot of love to D for Al. What do you think the ceiling is for Dere and is he regarded at the same level as Lamin? >> Well, uh, high ceiling for Desert D, not as high a ceiling as Lammy. So, if the question is a comparison between Desert D and Liny Mal, I think Lamey impacts and affects the game in more ways than Desert Dit does. That doesn't mean that D is not a tremendous talent. Yes, he is. But according to the question, it feels like can he be as good or is he regarded or do we think of him as good as Laminar to be in the same level? I don't think that's the case. As talented as Desert Dou, I just believe that there is something particularly special about Laminar and how he impacts the game, how he changes the game and how dependent Barcelona have become on him being the guy that can resolve problems for Barcelona, for Spain, for anybody. Give him the ball. Let him resolve issues for you. Desert do it can do that but I don't think at the same level as man >> for Don percentage chance Brighton finishes in top five. >> Oh, that's a good question. That's a good question. That is a good question. >> Okay, I think it's a good question. Don, >> I'm going to say that's a good question. I didn't see it coming. I thought it was going to be like top three or four or something. are top five. I'm going to say a 25% chance they'll do it. >> What about Manchester United, Don, since you put them there ahead of us. >> They'll be part of that conversation. >> Also, 25%. >> We've only played seven games. We played seven games, man. >> All right. >> What I think they've got, off the top of my head, I want to say they've got Liverpool and Man City next. That'll be the test. >> Okay. >> K, if you needed a last second babysitter for your kids, do you trust anyone on today's show with them? >> I mean, I think that question is self-explanatory. Really >> easy. >> I could make you all laugh, >> but I actually would trust all three of them with them. >> It's easy. >> And that's the truth because >> Al has actually put his family to work to look after my children. And >> it's already happened >> and it was a resounding success. Yes, he always makes a big effort with them whenever I have to bring them in. Shaka actually found my lost son, Luca, who disappeared somewhere upstairs in the office. It's more about my mothering skills. >> Wow, that's that's a different conversation. Different conversation. >> Shaka found him. And um Don has got about a million kids, so of course he's going to be able to look after my kids. I mean, I let Shaka off on that one. So is he. So yeah, I actually trust all three of them with the boys. >> So yeah, there you go, guys. Y >> see see the thing but the thing that would happen K the thing that would happen if Shaq was in charge he'd have them by the computer doing his power rankings for next week that's what would happen there might be more sense from five >> how do you get them to do it or his stats >> yeah that's right >> who knows all right lovely stuff thank you so much for sending in your questions we will be back tomorrow to do it all over again be sure to join us on ESPNFC Say,
