From the Colombian Mines to Champions League Debut: Nelson's Story
This ESPN FC feature is mostly Nelson's own account of growing up in a Colombian mining family, going into the mine at 18, and refusing to give up on his football dream. He credits persistence, family support, and especially his mother for helping him reach the professional and Champions League stage.
- I did not give up, and with my family's support I fulfilled my dream — At 19 I was in a mine and my dream seemed stalled, but I never quit, and my family's support helped me achieve it.
- Growing up in a mining family taught me commitment, teamwork, unity and gratitude — In a mine you do not know if you will come out; there is no light, it is hot, and the slightest mistake can harm you or a coworker.
- Going into the mine was not giving up football; it was a way to get ahead and keep chasing the dream — My mother told me to do something with my life in the mine, and I framed it as getting ahead and pursuing my football dream, even as others debuted at 15 while I was 18 in a mine.
- I was willing to play any position so my family's sacrifices would not be wasted — I played fullback or goalkeeper if needed and understood that my family's effort could not come to nothing.
- My mother is the most important and strongest woman in my life — She gave me love like a friend and confidante, and having family with me in difficult moments mattered greatly.

Te he traído algo. Nelson deoses story is one of a kind. It begins in the mountains in Marmato, small Colombian town and one of the oldest gold mining centers in the Americas. Has perdido gente conocido. See you on the next journey.
