‘One of them HAS TO GO’ 😳 REACTION to Bruno Fernandes criticizing Michael Carrick | ESPN FC
ESPN FC debates Bruno Fernandes criticizing Michael Carrick: who should go at United?
The panel discusses Manchester United's poor form and Bruno Fernandes publicly criticizing Michael Carrick and the coaching staff. Most guests see a broken dressing room and an untenable manager, while others target the ownership and players, calling for Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez to be sold and the squad rebuilt.
- Bruno Fernandes publicly saying the manager and coaching staff have no idea what they are doing crosses the line; one of the two has to go, and Carrick is now untenable. — As club captain he has thrown the people he works with every day under the bus; with no trust left between the dressing room and the staff, things cannot carry on normally.
- United's leadership is incapable of making the right call on the next manager; there is no obvious good option, and Antonio Conte would eventually set the place on fire and walk away. — The club's decision-making has been poor, some candidates have ruled themselves out, and Conte's approach is too combustible.
- This should not be pinned on Michael Carrick; Ratcliffe and the owners should tell Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez to find new clubs and never play for United again, and fix the dressing room from within. — They shift blame and lack accountability; a strong statement would back the manager and would be welcomed by United fans.
- Carrick cannot be written off so easily because he got United third last year; the players are failing individually and credentials are not the main issue. — He got results before, and sacking him for an easy option such as Kieran McKenna would not solve the players' problems.
- Carrick does not have the credentials for the Manchester United job long term; his interim bounce is like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's, and being sacked by Middlesbrough does not qualify him. — Putting round pegs in round holes can produce a short-term lift, but it says nothing about long-term management at this level.
- Two things can be true at once: the squad is not good enough and has bad apples, and Carrick is also not good enough for a job this big. — It is a perfect storm of a weak squad and a manager who is over his head.
- Carrick has lost or is close to losing the dressing room, and Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez should be sold in January. — Their public comments show a broken dressing room, their contracts are up next summer, and they are making an already bad dressing room worse.
- The club's lack of accountability is why Bruno Fernandes has the power to say what he wants; he should not be captain, and United need leaders who show fight on the pitch. — The club is not punishing him, and the performance showed no running, leadership, game plan, or personality on the field.
- Bruno Fernandes should not be captain and should not play at all; Carrick should drop him to make a statement even if it costs him his job. — No player should publicly tell the world the coaching staff have no clue, and Ferguson would not have tolerated it; Carrick should go down fighting.

Hello and welcome into the latest edition of ESPNFC. K Maria, Alejandro Moreno, and Shaka Hisop here in the studio. And joining us tonight from Barcelona, we have Dan Thomas and Craig Burley. Don Hutcherson will also be with us as well because we >> think we think he's with us. >> The camera first [laughter] time. >> Uh we do need to talk about Manchester United happened yesterday. >> They were thrashed by Champions League debutants Ko. Uh, lots of nice headlines from England as you can see, but the big one is that Bruno blasts angry Carrick. Bruno Fernandez criticizing his coach and the coaching staff after the game. And uh, Craig and Dan thought that by going to Barcelona they would escape the chatter about Manchester United, but it is not to be Dan because this is forcing us to talk about the problems that we are seeing at this club right now. Yeah, Luro Martinez of course spoke out last week and pretty much Bruno Fernandez went hold my beer >> or Lisandro or Lisandro Dan Lisandro Martinez. [laughter] >> I'm still a bit jetlagged. >> It's the time get a beer. Have a beer. [laughter] Have a beer. Get over it. But come on, have a beer. [laughter] >> I deserve it. >> Do you know the difference though? >> What between Landra and L? [laughter] >> Yeah. Yeah. Apart apart from the name. Oh. Oh, this has just gone so well. You know the difference though? Here's the difference. And I'm not saying either of them were correct. Certainly not at all. Landro Martinez basically threw the technical staff and and the people running the football club. Most of the people that generally players don't deal with or maybe even don't like. Uh he threw them under the bus and somewhat protecting his manager and the coaching staff and in some sense some of his teammates. Maybe the the signings obviously that didn't go down too well with the new signings. But the straw that's broke the camel's back is the fact that the club captain or any player but the club captain has basically said the coaching staff and the manager have no idea what they're doing. Now that is a big sea change in that scenario. Only something has to give. Either the manager has to go or either Fernandez has to go which we know won't happen. So I think we know what the outcome is. But you have a player here ultimately throwing his manager under the bus. That's the kind of group that you need. You know, people fall out with technical directors and and ownership and chief execs because you think, what the hell are they talking about? Uh but when it gets to the management and the staff, the people that you work with every day in that locker room, on that training field, there is no trust whatsoever. Uh this is now completely broken. And I think Bruno Fernandez was completely out of order here in terms of a dressing room, a club because he's come out and said it's it's everybody else's fault. Uh and and I think Carrick's position now is totally even not regarding results is totally untenable. >> So he's a dead man walking. >> Yeah. Well, I mean again, you know, he got the interim job. He did well. It's clear that it needs more experience, but the fact that Fernandez has come out and said this, one of them has to go. You cannot come out and just chuck the whole coaching staff and the manager under the bus and expect everything just to to roll on smoothly the following week. It it it can't happen. In these scenarios, you have to have a situation where Bruno Fernandez comes out, takes accountability himself, talks about moving forward, talks about working together, tries to back everything to the hilt until he can no longer do that. And clearly results uh will will take over, but he he's not. He's came out he's chucked Carrick under the bus and and Michael Carrick is a dead man walking. >> So, who next? >> Conte nglesman Southgate. Where are we going? Uh Eddie how >> yeah I don't know I don't know where I don't know where any and the people that they've brought in uh amongst all the things the glazes have done any have shown themselves wholly enable to have the knowledge and the now to run this football club in a proper manner and make good decisions. Uh there's the list. Hustler apparently ruled himself out today. Una apparently ruled himself out today. obviously says Fabregas is flavor of the month. You can forget old Tommy boy at the bottom cuz he balls it up in the summer with England again. So I wouldn't go that route and I'm not sure I'd go down the Antonio Conte route because he's just going to he's just going to eventually pour gas on it, set it on fire and walk away. So I I have got no idea what the right way forward is for this football club. [music] Uh >> does it matter? >> We talked about it before. If you had a Pep Kloppotti in charge, does it really matter with this squad of players? >> Well, you look at you got Urum has come in in the summer who is a good player, but he's not exactly going to take you to that next level. Not at his age. They got Marcus Rashford came back from Barcelona who' done particularly well. Didn't want to go back. Didn't want to go back. Uh but they couldn't get rid of him and he's back there. So, it's it's just it is just a mess. And it seems whoever run whoever runs this football club, do you remember before who was the guy the chief exe Ed what's his name? >> Woodwork. Woodward. >> Ed Woodward. Ed Woodward. Ed Woodward. He he gave all these interviews to Mark Ogden saying, "Oh, we're doing this great job. We're doing the right things. I'm running it for the Glazers." He was making bad decision after bad decision. The football department got changed when Inos come in. Ratcliffe brought in Brailsford who was a cycling guy. What the hell does he know about running a football department? He brings in Omar Baratti from Man City. Oh, he was part of that. Allegedly part of all that Man City time when they were allegedly cheating or they were cheating. Uh Jason Wilcox comes in, nobody likes him. So the whole thing is a mess. It just seems there is nobody capable there of making a proper decision that's going to take Manchester United forward in the next five or 10 years in the right direction. Looking at how they've run it so far, they'll make a decision and 18 months down the line, they'll go, "Oh, we've made a made a mess of this again. We're going to have to make another change." It's a complete mess. >> It's the problem when you give a former bar manager this sort of responsibility. Ah, thanks man. I knew there would be a little bit of a dig there, but Carrick will be in charge for the Bournemouth game. Don, I know you've got your own thoughts on everything that's gone down in the last 24 hours. >> Yeah. See, I I don't pin this on Michael Carrick. This is this is a bigger problem than Michael Carrick. I I would like to see the owners make a statement now. And apparently they've come out today and said business as usual. I mean, how can it be business as usual? I would like to see Jim Radcliffe get Landre Martinez, Bruno Fernandez in a room and tell them, get on the phone to your agents. You are going to be sold as quick as possible. Go and get yourself moves because you will never play for Man United again. And tell the world and tell the Man United fans exactly what you've told those two. And I would guarantee you Man United fans would go, "Yeah, I like that." Because all those names on that list have still got a deal with the same players that's at the football club. And some of them are rotten. Go and tell Bruno Fernandez and the Sandra Martinez you'll never play for this football club again and sort the dress room room out from within rather than just changing managers. >> That shack of the word from Are you are you one second? One sec. One second. Are you giving Michael Carrick a pass here, Don? Because you know every other manager of United is judged results. >> Michael Carrick Craig >> and and and rightly so. And he got them third last year. So you can't tell me that Michael Carrick can't do the job. He got him third. So, so why are the players failing on him? Because it's the individuals. >> You tell me what >> it's the players. >> Well, you tell me what his credential >> Well, tell me what his credentials were really to run Manchester United. >> Don't worry about credentials as a manager. Don't don't don't >> don't worry about credentials because I guarantee you if they fired him on that list there, they'll go Kieran McKenna. They'll take the easy option. So, don't worry about credentials. Credentials never worked in the past when Jose was in was was through the door. It's the players [laughter] that can happen. No. Well, but you have to have accountability. You have to be able to go in and man manage the football club. What What was it that Michael apart from the interim job where he goes in the same as Soulscar by the way. He goes in, everybody's happy for a change because Amarim was stinking. He puts round pegs in round hogs. All of a sudden, the players get a boost and it's a happy place again. It gets results. But longer term, longer term, what what's the credentials for the Man United job being sacked by Middlesborough? I mean, come on. >> No, no, but what you've said there, Craig, you you've said there, it's a happy place when they get results. How about being a decent place when you don't get results? How about the characters that are at Man United when you lose some games? Who are the ones that's going to say, "I tell you what, I'll roll my sleeves up." Not Landre Martinez and not Bruno Fand Fernandez because they're just chucking managers and hierarchy under the bus. Ah, it's not our fault. We're playing, but it's not our fault. It's the club's fault. It's the manager's fault. It's a scandalous place to be. >> Two things can be true. Two things can be true, Don. In my opinion, the players are not good enough, and I think that's that's evident. And and there are some bad apples. And also, the manager cannot not be good enough. I think two things can be true and I think we've got a perfect storm here that this is not this job is way too big for Michael Carrick and others and there's some rotten apples in that dressing room. This is a perfect scenario of two things can be true and that's why it's such a big mess at Man United. >> Shaka >> um listen I I think yeah I'm with Craig. I don't think Michael Carrick is up to to the task of of getting this Manchester United team anywhere near what we saw of of last season back into European places. Um quite clearly it certainly is feeling like he's lost the dressing room. You can't have Landre Martinez making statements as he did what was it a week ago now? uh and then your captain following up after everything that happened there and well we sat down and we spoke and and everything that kind of came out following that then you have Bruno Fernandez who's your club captain making these statements now it says to me that either he's lost the dressing room or he's very close to losing dressing room and we've all known all seen in our experiences in this game once that once that happens there is no getting it back from a a managerial perspective For for for Bruno Fernandez though, I I do not know where you find the nerve to say that as the team captain on the back of that performance individually and as a team. Now, it's it's also not lost in me that both Martinez and Bruno Fernandez, their contracts are up next summer. So to to Don's point about selling them, January might be the perfect time because given all their kind of posturings, you don't see them staying on. Um though I'm not sure exactly where they go following from from Manchester United, which club really comes in and gives them the kind of pay that maybe they are getting at at at Old Trafford. Uh but they they can't stay. I I I I don't they're bad apples in that dressing room. As bad a dressing room as it is, they're they're making it worse. And yeah, Ali, from the big English media outlets, we're hearing that he'll keep the captaincy and he's unlikely to face punishment. Bruno Fernandez, that is. >> And that is lack of accountability from the club. And that's why Bruno Fernandez feels like he has the power and the latitude to say whatever he wants because there is nothing coming his way. If you felt threatened in any way or if you felt like the club was run in a proper manner, this guy cannot be your club captain. This guy cannot be your club captain. this guy cannot represent your club. Your club right now is on fire, burning hot. And you need leaders, which we continue to ask for Manchester United to have leaders. We need leaders to actually come out and get their chest out and say, "We're going to do better. We're going to work together. We're going to run for each other and show it. Not only just say it, but then show it on the field." And from the evidence of what we saw against Ko, there was no running. There was no leadership. There was no presence. There was no game plan. There was no execution, no game plan, and there was no personality on the on the field. So all this personality that Bruno Fernandez is showing postmatch in saying what he says, if I were a Manchester United fan, I would ask for that personality to be shown on the field where it matters. Not in front of the media, not in front of the microphone, on the field, because that's where you are evaluated. And this team right now, when you evaluate who they are, both on the field and off the field, failure everywhere. and on the field they could definitely do with a win this weekend, Dan. >> Well, well, one sec, one second. If if Michael Carrick, who knows he's on his way out, right? Probably uh it may not get to the weekend. Who the hell knows? Where are we? Thursday. >> We're close. We're close. But if Michael Carrick has any if Michael [laughter] Carrick has any stomach, right, >> he knows his time is limited there. He also knows he needs results desperately if he's going to got half a chance of saving himself. But I think not only should he not be club captain Bruno Fernandez, I don't think he should play at all. If Michael carries make a statement and say, "I'm not having that." All right, you might sack me. We might lose it the weekend, but I'm not having that. I'm not having any player coming out publicly, come to my office and say to me, "Your tactics are crap, and we'll have a discussion." Don't go on national TV and and and and drag us through the mud, say, "We have no idea. You're out. You're not playing." and if I get sacked, I'm going to go down doing it my way. You think about that with Sir Alex Ferguson, what would have happened? I know he had these runins with with Roy Keane and that whatever. But any player who came out and said and and would have even intimated Alex Ferguson had no idea what he was doing, he wouldn't be at the football club. So he he should not play. They got to make a statement here. Say, listen, when we put managers in charge, you can't come out as a player and say this coaching staff that are employees of the football club have no no clue what they're doing. And if they've got anything about them, Michael Carrick, and if he's going to go down, which looks the ship is going down, go down with a fight and say you I'm not in the trenches with you, Bruno Fernandez, you're out. >> All right. Well, we'll end that segment there on Manchester United. It's going to be interesting to see. >> I thought Dan I thought Dan's input was excellent in that segment. He really brought it. >> Was perfect. [laughter] >> Well, Martinez needs to step it up. [laughter] >> Believe it. >> Believe it or not, we were doing Football America's earlier and that that and he was the pundit. >> I [laughter] just I just sat here and he >> But the wonderful thing was he accepted it so well. >> I can imagine [laughter] Unfortunately, we won't be hearing from the guys on tonight's Extra Time. There will still be more coming from us in the show tonight, though. Make sure to go check out the latest edition of Extra Time over on our YouTube channel. [music]
