3, 2, 1. Hey, take it easy! I hope your cup’s empty by now. A club legend. That’s a crazy thing to say. It was Jessy! Couldn’t you have told us to come in without having had a shower? Hey guys, welcome to Stranger Strings. We’ve written down all our little secrets on these pieces of paper. We’re going to read them out one by one in a moment. We’ll then have to guess which secret belongs to which player – or where we think it belongs – and mark it with our spray cans here. So let’s take the first card away. I’m addicted to perfume. It’s so obvious. Right, 1, 2, 3. What do you want from me? Are you daft? There’s only one person who sprays on perfume in the changing room before the warm-up and before the match, and that’s Malik. It’s not just me – I don’t do that before a match, but I do like perfumes. I would have said that. I was so sure it was Arne. But Arne always stinks, so why would he be that? It doesn’t suit him at all. Right, lads, thanks. I’ve been relegated four years in a row with four different clubs. Being relegated four years in a row with four clubs – that’s pretty tough. It’s crazy, yeah. So it can’t be Silas, because he’s been here for ages. I know it. You joined us last year during the Regionalliga season. Four different clubs. He told me recently that he’s never been relegated and never been promoted. I’ve never achieved anything. That can only be you. 3, 2, 1. Bro, in your hair, right? Who was it? It was me. Sorry, actually I should say. Two years in the Under-19s, two years in the senior team, and things have been going better ever since. It can only get better. When I was a child, my family sometimes had as many as 12 dogs at home. Has anyone worked at the animal shelter? No idea, mate. ‘12 dogs is one too many,’ I say. ‘One too many?’ With Silas, only 11 are OK. 3, 2, 1. Come on, that’s enough! Why? Blimey, why me? Well, it’s not me. But why not? No, it wasn’t me. 12 dogs, mate. Jessy? It was me, yes. Oh my goodness! Do you have an explanation for that? You’re playing it well, too. Yeah, that’s good, isn’t it? 12 dogs? Who on earth could that be? Yes, when we lived in Portugal, my mum volunteered at animal shelters – several of them, in fact. And we had seven ourselves – so we had seven dogs of our own – and then, at times, we took in another five puppies because the shelters were overcrowded. So my mum just took them in and then found them homes in Germany, the Netherlands and England. Did you know all their names? Yes, but not anymore. Well, out of the 7 dogs, yes. I had piano lessons for 6 years. That must have been someone clever, and it certainly wasn’t any of you. Right, 1, 2, 3. I hope your thing’s empty by now. So that’s true, Arne, isn’t it? Yes, it is. But do you still play the piano, Arne? Are you fed up with life? No. Blimey, what a shame. Cool! Maybe you should give that a go, just to calm down a bit. Oh no. No, no, no, not again. I go to the hairdresser’s every week. We know who it isn’t. Well, it’s not me. It’s not me either. Well, it could be any of those three. I mean, if you look at my sides, they’re overdue – by more than a week. So there are only two left to consider. 3, 2, 1! Arne, you’ve already got glue on the back of your neck. These are the best ones here at the end, aren’t they? Look at what you look like then. Yes, that’s me. Couldn’t you have told us we’d be coming without having had a shower? Every week? Yes, every week. It’s an expensive habit. How much do you pay at the hairdresser’s? Is the hairdresser ever going to finish? €20. €20? €80 a month just for a haircut. I went to a BVB trial for the U11s and wasn’t selected. So, there can only be two. It only could be the two of you. You’re from round here and you’re from round here too? Come on, chill out! 3, 2, 1. I need a new tin. It really was me. Seriously? Yeah! Seriously? I did a trial with the U11s for about a month or so. It’s been a long month. Right, and when did you join BVB then? I was scouted whilst I was still in the U15s, and I moved there when I joined the U16s. U16s? Yes. Blimey. Well, a club legend. Back in the day, whenever I lost at video games, I’d throw my controller against the wall and put holes in it. So it might well be true, because I never lost. I know someone like that, I think. I know one too. I think I know one because we played together recently. There was one who got angry very quickly. I’m the epitome of calm. 3, 2, 1. Why me, now? Your bottle’s broken. You’re a wreck. I reckon it was Kevin. I really do think it was Kevin. Kevin? No, it wasn’t me. It wasn’t you? No. No, it was Jessy. Jessy? It was Jessy! What? No! I have to say, you lied well. Have you ever considered to become an actor? It was back when I was at boarding school in Bremen, and I got really worked up playing FIFA one time – so the controllers just flew through the air, and there was this cardboard wall, and one of the controllers ended up smashing into it. It left a hole. At boarding school? At boarding school. I got an absolute telling-off for that. Very good, very good. Yeah, mad, isn’t it? I wouldn’t have thought so. Yeah, but not anymore. I was absolutely certain it had to be Kevin. Yes, me too. I don’t have any controllers. I eat eggs every morning, even though I don’t like them. That’s a mad statement. That’s crazy too. I think I actually know who it is. I caught wind of something about it the other day. Me too. A ‘fitness plate’ or something like that? Yeah, that must be it. Yeah, mate, he just had breakfast somewhere yesterday. Anyway, I’m eating – I love eggs. 3, 2, 1. Well, it’s definitely not me. I reckon it’s Kevin. I don’t really like the taste, but otherwise I get stomach ache if I eat anything else. Yeah, we saw what happened in Bonn, didn’t we? For the people who were there. Yes, I’ve been having a bit of trouble with my stomach; I came on as a substitute in the 70th minute and asked to be taken off in the 94th. I’d been having stomach ache. And then you just went straight through? But I did make the decisive assist, at least. At least that. Well done. Then you can get yourself substituted, I’m telling you. A year and a half ago, I was still playing football for €50 a month. It must be Jessi. It can’t have been Malik, because his hairdresser costs €80 a month. Arne? Yes, that’s right. I negotiated badly – and on my own. Back in my youth, I played as a striker, a centre-back and a goalkeeper. Blimey, not in the face! I think it was Verlaat. No, it was me. Really? You were a striker? Yeah, I played every position, mate. I played for a village club; we rotated the squad. Well, mainly when I was younger, before the U16s. I even played up front in the cup final once. Really? Did you score? No. There’s a reason why I’m a goalkeeper now. I once went for a ride in Anton Stach’s boot. We know each other from our time in Bremen, but I didn’t— I mean, not in the boot— But you know each other, don’t you? You’re the only one who knows him. 3, 2, 1. Whoever it was, they played brilliantly. Yes, it was me. I knew it, I knew it! The video’s still on TikTok – you can pop it up here if you like. Funny story – I was visiting a family member who was playing with Anton Stach at the time. Then we went for a jog, jogged over to his place, had to carry a mattress back from his place to ours, and then there were only two seats up front and one on the mattress in the boot. I got to have that one. Right, now it’s your turn. What are your little secrets? Feel free to share them in the comments. Let’s get involved. We’re really looking forward to it. And apart from that, warmest regards from us.
