Football Daily Podcast: Diego Gomez's long-range rocket, Manchester United's Leeds draw and the Martinez fallout

The pod discusses Diego Gomez's long-range goal against Crystal Palace, whether goalkeepers should adjust their positioning, and Paul Robinson's view on conceding from halfway. It then covers Manchester United's draw at Leeds United, Bruno Fernandes's best role, the fallout from Martinez's public comments, and a soft red card in Brentford vs Liverpool.

Brighton and Lloyd made history this weekend! The boys are back to discuss that halfway line goal and why it might be the best of the genre. Paul Robinson joins us to give the goalkeeper's perspective and if he did or didn't mean to score his own longe-range belter against Watford back in 2007 (he didn't). Paul also gives his view on the draw between Leeds and Man Utd after commentating at Elland Road and explains why Michael Carrick's changes paid off, even for out of form Bruno Fernandes. Well, look, there's only one place to start and it is with your sweethead because I I from my perspective, this was a perfect moment and I want you to talk me through it. >> So, Rick is basically referring to the fact that yesterday I went to Brenford versus Liverpool. >> I went with a few friends and I'd say I'm a neutral bit of a bit of an allegiance for for for Brenford. >> All right. friends, you know, have uh have supported them, played for them, worked for them and stuff. So, went along and then just towards the end, I said to the girls I was with, I was like, "Girls, get ready to head the ball." Like, what? And then 7 seconds later, I'm headering a ball at a Premier League game. And let me tell you, Rick, as bucket lists go, I think that is the number one thing on any football fans bucket list. >> Yeah. >> Headering a ball. I was absolut first I was a little bit dreading it cuz it came over I was like well I've got to do it now >> and I headed it and there was a little bit of a I'd say a smattering of applause from around the stadium smattering. >> Yeah. I I actually thought more I could everyone was like wow he just headed it. I was like yeah thanks to a a wayward mallister free kick. >> Um but I cannot tell you how incredible it feels to header a ball during a game that's gone into the crowd. And I've popped it on my Instagram and it's got 1 at time of record. It's got 1.5 million views >> and so it should. >> And everyone's just saying this is the only thing I want to do in life and I have nine kids. >> It's beautiful. It's so >> everything from you get a really solid I don't want to compliment you too much here but you get a really really solid contact. >> Yeah. There's a there's a tiny little stumble which makes you very relatable >> and then you sit back down >> and you pop your collar >> and you're as you mentioned inexplicably surrounded by ladies and it's I don't I we've spent a lot of time together and I've never thought this about you. Go >> on. >> It was cool. >> It was very cool. >> It was so cool. >> I can be cool, Rick. >> I can be cool. >> On this one occasion, you definitely were. >> What I will say is there was >> I'm so jealous. >> The ball came up and I was like, I'm going to have this here and I did it. I had to think about catching cuz the head is so much better. >> Do you know what I' and weirdly I'd been thinking about it all game. >> I would if you'd gone to catch and dropped, that's what I would have liked the most. >> I'd just moved to a remote island in Scotland like just turned off all the electrics. I I I knew that I was going to header it. I I thought about it all game weirdly. I just had this feeling that I was going to header a ball. >> That bit is It's quite mad, isn't it? Yeah, it's quite mad. And I hadn't even drunk anything at that point. >> And so it just came over. I was like, well, I've got I've got to header it. I then did header as you say there was a stumble I stood on Phoebe's foot. >> It's like it's a small st. So it's very oink. It's very nice. >> I say it just it humanizes the whole thing. I >> if you just do it perfectly and then and then pop the collar. It's a bit too much. But the stumble so sweet. >> It was a bit it would have been a bit too AI going that was not that that was too perfect. There was a small stumble. Basically I stood on my girlfriend's foot. Um she when I looked at her her head was in her hands. I then went to go and sit down. There's a real roller coaster of emotions of like amazement, despair, what what's just happened. Anyway, I've stood on her foot. >> Just pride. It should just be pride. >> It should just be pride. And that's my boy. >> Yeah. >> And then I go to sit down and in me standing up and I kind of This is where I'm quite smooth with it. The seat had flipped up. So I nearly but luckily I realized at the last minute and then just popped it down. And then I was like, "Right, pop the collar." And then cuz I just was like if anyone's watching or just I don't know if match of the day managed to like film it and I'm I'm doing it. So I popped the collar did a little can popped the collar and I just made sure my hair was still there cuz I do have a hair transplant. And >> it's not glued on. >> It's not glued on but you know I'm I'm still I haven't read the manual. Um so I'm still I wasn't sure what you know so I just checked. Yeah. No, that's still there. And then just kind of like from around Yep. That was me. And uh honestly people on the walking out going mate great adder. They were they were complimenting me on my head. >> Rick, I've done some great things in my time. >> Um, >> go on. No, I have. I, you know, I've sung at the Royal Albert Hall. I've met Lionel Messi. I've sung the national anthem at a number of stadiums, including Brenford Stadium. >> You've done a podcast where you haven't mentioned the fact that you've met Lion Messi >> and then there never there never will be one. >> But to head a ball during a game at a Premier League match, absolute bucket list. Top done. Thanks. Move on. Well, I I felt a huge amount of vicarious pleasure >> just by thinking, I know that guy. That guy is incredibly cool. I know him. He's my friend. >> I do a podcast. I do a podcast with him. >> Okay. Bit harsh. >> Um if um I mean if anyone else listening or watching has any experience with uh heading a ball >> Oh yeah. >> from the stands, let us know for goodness sake. Um the number the WhatsApp number at some point I'll learn this. I haven't learned it yet. 08,000289369. >> It's very easy. Go >> now. >> 08,000289. >> You're reading it. I just saw you read it. >> Okay, I'll close my eyes. 08,000 >> 289369. >> That was good. >> Thank you. >> You're still getting You still got the glow. You're a cool guy. >> I'm a cool guy. >> He can head. He can remember WhatsApp numbers. Is there anything he can't do? We haven't got time for that. >> That's the That's the pod. Thanks very much for listening to this week. That's all we need to cover. I think it >> sort of is. >> Is Yeah, it really is. >> We It's probably worth mentioning Brighton. Oh, absolutely. >> Who annihilated Crystal Palace in the M23 derby. Um 5-nil. Um there's a there's a lot of crazy stats around around Brighton at the moment. Only three teams have ever scored more goals than Brighton after their first seven games in Premier League history. That's not bad, is they? They've scored 23 goals, 34 in all in all competitions. Um they were 3-0 up after after 10 minutes. One of those goals is obviously the one you we need to talk about. It's Diego Gomez from 50. They measured it 51.3 meters and it oh wow it's a thing. It's it's almost better than your header. Not quite but it's almost >> it's on par >> because the reason that I rate it so highly because we've we've seen these you know there's been a number of these kind of Adam thank you um friend of the pod Charlie Adam. Charlie Adam, I think, uh, basically tried one of those every game, whoever he was playing for, and he usually missed. >> Well, actually, I've got a little stat here. Um, he tried shots from over 35 yards out on 41 occasions. >> Oh, there you go. So, I stand by what I said every game pretty much. But the thing about a lot of those is they are kind of they're not speculative, but they're kind of lobbed. Yeah. >> Because you're so far out. So you kind of, >> you know, there's not a huge amount of power. This looks like just a shot. It's a shot from blooming miles out, you know, >> and it fizzes in. >> Yeah. You know, it's magnificent. >> People refer to goals as rockets. Oh, that's an absolute rocket. >> This genuinely I think is a rocket in the way in which it was propelled. It there's no kind of like up and down. It looks obviously there is up and down. That's how gravity works. But it was just so laser focused. Let's just refer back to the David Beckham goal against uh Wimbledon. Like he it was he wasn't a speculative, you know, he knew that he would be able to get it on target, but >> but it's, you know, it's it's a lofted Sullivan was in goal. >> I think it was Sullivan. Yeah. >> Uh and he can see that he's off his line. If you look at the Palace goalkeeper, he's not like off his line, off his line. >> No. >> So he's he's basically going >> he's probably feeling quite happy with his position. >> Yeah. >> He's feel free to have a go from there, mate. But I think that now people when they're playing Brighton will be like, "Well, do I just stay on my line?" >> Well, because he Gomez has had a few pops this season. >> I think he's had You looked this up. How many? >> I did. Yeah. Um, so he's attempted four shots from 50 plus yards in his Premier League career, including one from, wait for this, 75 yards out against Sunderland earlier this month. So, he knows what he's doing >> and it's just for it. He's got a taste for it now. It's just I think it is a very different type of long range shot that we're seeing and I as I say I think I think most goalkeepers facing him from now on be like >> do I need to just stay on my line like what what what what do I do? >> There there are as as you said seven that have been scored from a greater distance. The first three >> are goalkeepers and I actually discount those. >> What? Sorry. Why >> they're not because the goalkeepers are they're basically just hoofing it. But all of the others, they've had a look and they think, "I'm going to try and I'm going to try and beat the keeper because he's off his line." The goalkeepers are just like big old lumps and they're just whacking it, aren't they? >> Wow. >> So, you're discounting goals. >> I'm dis I'm discounting the because the top three >> the top three. Yeah. Bear Rich, Howard, and Robinson. >> Yeah. They're I just sort of think, come on. >> What? >> You know what I mean? >> I I do know what I mean. >> You do know what I mean. They're not as good. They're not as good. >> Fine. You can say you can't discount them. They might not be as good. Sometimes there there's wind assistance. Did any of those goalkeepers mean to score is I think what you're trying to allude at. >> Thank you. >> We don't know. Well, actually, >> we can find out now because friend of the pod, uh, Paul Robinson, I've given a little tinkle and he's, uh, he's joining us now. Paul, first off, we we've got to chat to you about the goal that you scored. You're still in the top three. 84.7 m from goal. Like Rick thinks that goalkeepers just lump it and it's >> Hang on. Hang on. I don't think we need to tell him this. >> Okay. Yeah. Sorry. Yeah. Did you mean to score that goal? >> No. What? The the one for Tottenham against Watford? >> Yes, that one. >> No, I absolutely didn't. No, I just lumped it. He's he's absolutely right. >> And I lumped I lumped it as far forward to me. And if you remember me, our striker at the time wasn't the most wasn't the most mobile of strikers. And if it didn't land with And if it didn't land within 10 ft of his perimeter, he didn't move, which probably assisted my goal in a way. >> That is great. Okay, fine. You didn't mean it. But >> the one at Leads I did obviously that was a Roy the Rovers moment. But Rick is absolutely correct. That was a pure lump downfield. >> Thank you. >> No, that's >> and and I'm saying that the other two probably were just lumps downfield as well. >> Yeah. No, to be fair, I think Begovich is a lump at 95.7 meters. I don't think that was a shot. >> No. No. >> I'm not being funny. You're not shooting from that distance. The last thing that goes through your head. The last thing that goes through your mind is, "Oh, do you know what? I'll test the keeper from it. Now, the interesting one with mine is because at at the time I scored the goal, um I was in really poor form and my England place was in question and it was against Ben Foster and people say, "Oh, he scored a goal past Ben Foster. Did he did he mean need to put it past him?" >> Did you ever get done from distance or nearly done from distance? Um, yes, several times if you're talking about 20 25 yards. But >> no, no, I'm I'm from >> Not from the other half of the field. >> No, >> no, no, not from the other half of the field. No, no, I never left my line. That's why I had such a long career. >> I remember that one goal actually uh you done from about 35 yards. Grimby down versus Tottenham, John Paul and Malo in the 89th minute. I don't really mention it that much to you, but um so yeah, I mean obviously you've been done from distance, but not that kind of like level of distance. Paul, you still there? >> Yeah. Thanks for being here, Paul. Appreciate it. Really appreciate it. >> You know, the next time you turn up in Harriut, you're not welcome at the house. And Mrs. just said you're not having dinner again. >> Fantastic. Fantastic hospitality at Paul Robson's house, FYI. If and I know this is a hypothetical for you then, Paul, if you do get beaten as the as the Palace goalkeeper has been beaten today by a shot from 50 yards, what does that do to to your confidence? And even as I'm saying that, um, I'm aware that the fact that he's conceded five today is probably a bigger problem. >> Well, nothing. It's a fluke. It's not going to happen again. It happens once in your whole career. I mean, that that type of shot and that type of incident that we've seen today, you don't see week in and week out watching match of the day, do you? It It's not happening. It It doesn't happen. So, as a goalkeeper, you just go, "Okay, it's happened once. It's never happening again." >> Really? So, you just move on. You just go, "Right, just back back to normal. >> Back to normal. Let's let >> We've had this We've had this conversation many a time. Um and you talk about a golfer's mentality. As a goalkeeper, you have to have a golfer's mentality because you can't dwell on what's just happened because you're not going to be able to move forward and you're not going to be able to be the best of yourself going forward if you like. I always relate back to Tiger Woods. It was the the Masters, not last year, probably a year before, maybe year before that. Took a 10 on a par three. Right. If that's me, clubs are in the water. I'm getting in the car and I'm going home. He birded the next hole. And that's the type of mentality the goalkeeper has to have. >> As you said earlier, sorry, I think Crystal Palace have bigger fish to fry, so to speak. Like I mean, they conceded three in the first 10 minutes. >> Yeah. >> One from distance and uh I think they conceded 17 and seven. >> Auto has had a horrible time today. Bless him. >> Not been a great day. Um Paul, you were at uh you were at Ellen Road this afternoon to watch leads Manchester United. Finish one all. United's winless streak uh running to six matches now. I I thought United were pretty good in the first half actually. >> I agree with you. I think they were pretty good for the for the whole of the game in all honesty. Um I've done all three of their games. I did the Spurs game last weekend. I was in Madrid for the two-0 defeat and I thought today was their best performance of the week and there was a huge question mark over them coming into the game today and I like many other people had lead United to beat them today but the way that Michael Carrick set them up and the way that his team played I was actually impressed with the with what they did. Um we got to a point in that game probably 65 70 minutes and both managers just went I'm happy with the point's okay you know you you can never you never devalue a point as against chase in the three and I think both managers were pleased with that because lead United it extended their unbeaten home record and for Michael Carrick after the recent time that he's had and the noise around Manchester United I thought that was a very conservative point for both teams teams today. >> It was interesting. I was listening to the post-match interviews on Five Live after the game. Michael Carrick said, "Yeah, we'll take a point. Good performance." And obviously there's been a lot of uh stories in the week with Man United, which we'll get to in a second. But then Daniel actually was like, "Do you know what? I'm not happy with that. I mean, we and he said it goes to show how far we've come in the last year or so that we we should have won that and we we wanted to win that." And I guess, you know, lead United having a pretty pretty fantastic season. The tables really have turned, haven't they? >> What are they? Seventh at the moment. And you know, realistically, do they have European ambitions, Robo? >> Well, it's the usual thing, isn't that with with success comes um expectation? >> And last season, the expectation was to stay in the Premier League. They did that and they did that comfortably. This season, the second season, you think, what you going to do? Okay, we'll stay in the Premier League again. But all of a sudden, they've recruited extremely well in the summer. The managers found a system and a formation that works for him and the board have supported him in the summer by bringing in players that work in that system and they go to the go to places like Arsenal at the weekend where they got five put past them last year >> and they were the better team. They lost 2-1 but they were the better team at the weekend and now they're they're looking like a good established Premier League team. So, I spoke to a lot of people, my friends included, after the after the game today and they were disappointed. >> Like, you're disappointed at getting a draw against Manchester United. And, you know, look at where Leads have been and look at where they are now. >> The club is in such a good position. I genuinely think that was that was a really good result for for both today, but for leads moving on unbeaten at home, that they're continuing on a really good run. I I saw on the um BBC like player ratings, Bruno Fernandez I think got a six today and it's interesting because for a lot of last season and and actually previous seasons there's been a conversation along the lines of where would Manchester United be without Bruno Fernandez? He's that important to them and he's not in such great form at the moment. And they do they do struggle without that, don't they? >> Played professional football for over 20 years. Never look at your ratings. Never ever look at your ratings which somebody else gives you. Um but on the Bruno Fernandez topic, he played on the right hand side in Madrid this week. He played on the left today and his best position is through the middle where they played him as as a false nine. Um and Bumo sorry Bumo played on the left today and he played through the middle but Michael Carrick in the last two or three games has has flirted with different positions for him. They need to get the best out of their best player which is what he did today. Bruno Fernandez doesn't need to be sat in a holding midfield role thinking right I need to defend the back four then I need to link the defense and the forwards together and be there on transition and turn defense into attack very quickly where actually he's deployed today higher up the field where he is most effective and for Manchester United going forward put your best players in the best positions they still lack a number nine but Michael Carrick tried today experimented today with Bruno Fernandez as a false nine and it worked. I think we'll see it again. >> We spoke about Landre Martinez's little outburst on Thursday's pod and then after we recorded he has actually released an apology after talks an actual apology. >> Um yeah, after talks with the club. >> Um Paul, you were very passionate about this on on Tuesday night when it when it happened. I found the reaction kind of fascinating because it pretty much divides into Manchester United fans being like, "Great, someone's saying it." >> He's right. >> And then a lot of um ex players and pundits just saying, "Yeah, but yo
