Aston Villa Injury Update: Ian Maatsen Faces 6-8 Weeks Out
· GiveMeSport
Aston Villa's Ian Maatsen will miss 6-8 weeks due to an ankle injury sustained against Nottingham Forest.
Aston Villa defender Ian Maatsen suffered an ankle injury during their game against Nottingham Forest, and Jacob Tanswell has now confirmed how long he will be out for.
Maatsen was substituted against Forest following a nasty challenge from midfielder James McAtee, with Unai Emery and Villa fans sweating on the extent of his injury.
John McGinn filled in as a left-back for the Midlands club for the final stages of the game, with Emery already making all five of his substitutes.
Villa suffered a 2-1 defeat against Forest as Igor Jesus scored the winner to ensure Emery's men are still searching for their first Premier League win of the season.
Villa currently sit in 19th position with just one point, and the recent news of Maatsen's injury is only going to dampen their supporters' spirits.
Tanswell, reporting for The Athletic, has confirmed that Maatsen will be out for around six to eight weeks with an ankle injury.
Maatsen had a scan after the game, with Emery confirming that he feared the left-back could be out for a 'long, long time'.
The scan confirmed that there was no fracture, but Maatsen has suffered tendon damage, which could keep him out until November.
Thankfully for Villa, there is a lengthy international break approaching, meaning Maatsen shouldn't miss as many games as he usually would during a six-to-eight-week period.
Speaking after the game, Emery suggested that Forest deserved to find a winner against Villa, with his side under immense pressure after going down to 10 men.
> “We finished with Ian Maatsen injured and with 10 players, and we conceded so many chances in the last minutes. They (Forest) scored a second goal, and they deserved it."
Speaking on the Maatsen injury, Emery believed that McAtee should have been sent off for his challenge on the Villa left-back.
> “But after watching it on TV, I think the VAR referee should call the (on-pitch) referee because it’s a tackle, a clear tackle, behind Maatsen, and for me it should be a red card, and it’s different.”
