Vinicius Jr. has been dominating the headlines over the past few weeks, most recently for picking up a red card in Real Madrid’s win over Villarreal.
The Brazilian international was sent off for allegedly trying to grab hold of Nathan Saliba’s hair and has been subsequently given a four-match suspension .
The unrest over Vinicius is not just limited to Real Madrid matches but appears to have spread throughout La Liga, as evident in Real Sociedad’s recent game against Deportivo de A Coruna.
Concerning chants against Vinicius
As reported by AS , La Liga has formally flagged an insulting chant aimed at the Real Madrid forward during Real Sociedad’s matchday-eight fixture against Deportivo de A Coruna.
The chant, which branded Vinicius an “imbecile”, was sung by home supporters at the Anoeta stadium in San Sebastian.
It has now been included in the report that LaLiga submits each week to the RFEF’s Disciplinary Committee and the Anti-Violence Commission, documenting any chants that incite violence or carry insulting content.
That a player was targeted in this manner at a ground where he was not even present underlines just how polarising a figure Vinicius has become in Spanish football.
A wider problem across LaLiga
The Vinicius chant was far from the only incident logged from the round.
La Liga’s report also noted that, on three separate occasions during the Alaves against Atletico Madrid match, home supporters directed vulgar chants at Spain, the national team and Spanish people.
During the Malaga against Espanyol fixture, meanwhile, fans twice aimed a chant wishing harm on visiting player Bryan Zaragoza, who had opened the scoring in a 1-1 draw.
The governing body has for years been pushing for greater powers to tackle violence and abuse inside stadiums. To that end, it continues to gather reports, suggestions and requests from supporters attending matches through its LALIGAVS platform.
The hateful comments and attitude towards Vinicius by other La Liga teams and its supporters is a problem the league hasn’t been able to solve, despite threatening strong actions.
