Bruno Guimaraes brutally trolls Sunderland as ex-Newcastle star scores first Arsenal goal

Bruno Guimaraes was booed by Sunderland fans on his first return to the Stadium of Light since leaving Newcastle United for Arsenal, but he had the last laugh with a goal and a pointed gesture

Bruno Guimaraes wasted very little time in trolling Sunderland fans online after his first Premier League goal - and win - at the Stadium of Light. The midfielder was met with a chorus of boos as he emerged as a second-half substitute, due to his long-standing affiliation with Newcastle United.

However, he almost instantly silenced the majority of the 48,707 inside the ground, as he gave Arsenal the lead 58 minutes into the match with a pinpoint effort from the edge of the area, having found himself in acres upon acres of space.

The £75million summer transfer was quick to rub salt in the wounds of Sunderland fans as he made a 'small' gesture with his fingers as he raced away in celebration. The Black Cats' night went from bad to worse in stoppage time, as Bukayo Saka converted from the spot.

The tricky winger was brought down by Reinildo in the game's dying moments, with the Sunderland defender seeing a second yellow card, and subsequently, a red for his foul. And following the clash, Guimaraes turned to social media to twist the knife further.

Posting a photo collage of his goal and celebrations, he wrote: "They know what they are. The fat rat wishes you a nice weekend."

The reference to a 'fat rat' in Guimaraes' post relates to an insult hurled at the midfielder by a supporter as he arrived at the Stadium of Light to a wall of jeers from the home faithful - and is not a dig at Newcastle fans who turned their backs on him following his move to North London this summer.

The club captain sent devoted Magpies supporters into meltdown when he opted to sign for Arsenal as part of a major summer shake-up on Tyneside, which also saw Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon shown the door.

Yet Guimaraes made it abundantly clear in his post-match interview with TNT Sports that Newcastle will always hold a special place in his heart. When asked whether there could have been a more fitting venue to score his first Arsenal goal, he replied: "Yeah, a beautiful goal and a very good place.

> "Everyone knows my past, had an amazing history at Newcastle but now I'm trying to create new history here and it starts with the right foot."

Sunderland, who find themselves sitting 14th in the Premier League table following the 2-0 defeat, face a hectic week ahead as they venture into European competition for the first time since 1973 on Wednesday, September 16.

The Black Cats take on AZ Alkmaar on home turf, before turning their attention back to Premier League duty against Manchester City on Sunday, September 20.

Arsenal, meanwhile, now take on Ipswich Town in the EFL Cup on Tuesday, September 15, before returning to Premier League action against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday, September 19.
