Insider report reveals Man Utd stars asked a tense question to Lisandro Martinez after his outburst
There have been plenty of headlines made in the aftermath of Manchester United's 2-0 loss against Atletico Madrid. Most notably, Lisandro Martinez caused a major stir with his comments after the game .
The Red Devils have made their worst start to a Premier League season in 40 years, and followed up a drab 1-1 draw against 10-man Tottenham Hotspur with a trip to Spain. They were once again outplayed, this time losing in Madrid.
Pablo Barrios opened the scoring for Atletico after one minute, before Ademola Lookman later made it 2-0 with 11 minutes to play, by which point Leny Yoro had been sent off for the away team. The defeat heaps pressure on Michael Carrick and his team.
Martinez could not hide his anger after the match. In a quite remarkable outburst, he took aim at the board as well as his own teammates , saying:
> "I have to control myself a lot, but sometimes it [the defeat and form] is a reflection on the club at the moment. We had a fantastic season last season, and now we expect more from the top. We needed more players to compete, because many teams bring in other players as well.
> "I expect more [after being asked if United have a Champions League quality team]. Yes, 100 per cent [I expected more investment in the summer. I expect more from our technical director, I have to be honest."
Youri Tielemans was asked for his thoughts on the comments, with the reporter saying: "Martinez has just been very critical of the Man Utd board for lacking investment this summer. He said it's not been good enough. What do you feel as someone that's come into the club this summer?"
Amid the suggestion that Martinez's comments were partially aimed at him, Tielemans didn't offer much in response, saying: "I've got no comment on that."
However, as reported by the Guardian, it's now emerged that some of the Man Utd players weren't happy with Martinez's criticism after the game and some asked for more specifics from the Argentine .
Although the exact players who asked the question are not named in the insider report, it's said that Martinez's outburst caused at least one teammate to 'challenge the defender' with a question. They wanted to know who exactly the Argentine believes is not good enough for the side.
The article notes that the question was asked before the flight back to Manchester, which caused tension to be heightened among the squad. On top of this, it's claimed that his remarks are seen as the centre-back 'eyeing his future' as his contract expires in the summer.
That said, it is felt that senior Man Utd players share Martinez’s frustrations with the club’s hierarchy . On that front, he doesn't appear to have been challenged by his teammates in the same way.
It will be interesting to see what comes of the outburst, with the Argentine set to potentially face internal disciplinary action over his comments.
