Manchester United’s hierarchy have been dealt a further blow following the explosive post-match interview Lisandro Martinez delivered after Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Martinez criticised those at the top of the club, including Director of Football Jason Wilcox, for failing to strengthen the squad sufficiently in the summer.

While the Red Devils bolstered their midfield options with the acquisitions of Carlos Baleba (£70 million), Andrey Santos (£50 million) and Youri Tielemans (£35 million), other areas of the squad were left unimproved from last season.

Former United captain Gary Neville warned the squad was in desperate need of a new centre-back and left-back, days before the summer transfer window closed, but Carrick has been left with the same back-line he finished last season with.

The outcome? Just two wins from nine matches in all competitions at the start of the current campaign.

Defeat away at rivals Leeds United on Sunday would leave Carrick, who only signed a two-year contract to become the club’s permanent manager in May, clinging to his job. Speculation is rife over who might replace the retired midfielder at Old Trafford .

Alex Crook, talkSPORT’s chief football correspondent, has now revealed that senior Man Utd players share Martinez’s frustrations with the club’s hierarchy.

In a fresh blow for Jason Wilcox and co, it’s understood the Argentina international is not the only United player unhappy with a perceived lack of ambition at board level.

Crook adds: “There is a sense Wilcox missed the opportunity to build on the momentum of the second half of last season by only bringing in three midfielders in the summer when other areas of the squad were in need of additions.

> “Captain Bruno Fernandes has been visibly frustrated during United's poor recent run and doubts remain over his long-term future at the club.”

Martinez, it seems, was merely expressing the thoughts of senior figures in the United dressing room, rather than going rogue.

But whether others will show the same level of bravery - or audacity, depending on each individual’s perspective - remains to be seen.

While Martinez has been praised for speaking out by many United supporters, other high-profile figures were less than impressed with the Argentine’s eye-opening Amazon Prime interview.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher said Martinez was “out of order” while reacting to the interview on CBS Sports, while United’s all-time leading goalscorer Wayne Rooney said: "For me, it's disrespectful to his teammates.

> "I had a similar situation when I went in and asked Sir Alex Ferguson about what players we were bringing in.

> "I apologised two days later, so I can speak from experience of what he's just done.

> "It is very disrespectful. There are a lot of young players in that dressing room, as well. They are looking for some guidance from experienced players."
