Tielemans Responds to Martinez's Extraordinary Comments After Atletico 2-0 Man Utd
· GiveMeSport
Tielemans, who joined Man Utd this summer, was asked to respond to Martinez slamming the Red Devils' recruitment.
Lisandro Martinez did not hold back as he gave a stunning interview after Manchester United's defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.
United, who have made their worst start to a Premier League season in 40 years, were beaten once again in the Spanish capital. Pablo Barrios and Ademola Lookman were on the scoresheet as Michael Carrick's side lost 2-0.
Martinez was absolutely furious in his post-match interview. The 28-year-old couldn't hide his anger as he called out the club for their recruitment this summer.
> He said: “Really poor, really poor. I have to control myself a lot but sometimes is a reflection of the mirror of how is our club at the moment. It is annoying, disappointing coming here and I am not seeing my team trying to get an amazing result here.
> “I expect more [investment], 100%. I expect more from our technical director [Jason Wilcox]. I have to be honest, as players we have to do more but it is also important when you make a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night. Last season we did everything, we created the base to create an amazing team.”
> “I don’t think so. He does his best," Martinez said when asked if Carrick had been sufficiently backed. "Every season is different. You can’t stay with what you did last season. The teams knows how you play, they know every detail, if you don’t change next season [it] is a big problem. You can’t keep changing, changing, changing the manager. What about other areas? I can’t say more.”
Tielemans was one of the players that were signed by United this summer. He joined the club in a £35m move from Aston Villa.
The Belgian, who played 66 minutes at Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium, has struggled at the beginning of his United career. He spoke to the media shortly after Martinez's interview and he was asked to respond to share his feelings about his teammate's comments.
> The reporter asked: "Martinez has just been very critical of the Man Utd board for lacking investment this summer. He said it's not been good enough. What do you feel as someone that's come into the club this summer?"
> Tielemans was tight-lipped as he responded: "I've got no comment on that."
> He was then asked whether emotions could be running high in the dressing room. He replied: "Yeah, maybe. I don't know."
Tielemans said United did well in spells against Atletico, despite their defeat. He said, per Manchester Evening News:
> "When you concede after a minute, it's very hard to get into the game straight away. Yeah, we really wanted to start well, to start right.
> "But yeah, they got a - I wouldn't say lucky counter, but the ball falls into the attacker's feet whilst we make the tackle and try and double up on him. So yeah, then they finish well.
> "We try and come back into the game, create a few chances that we can't bury and we can't score. And unfortunately after that, it was just not for us.
> "They have the quality, they can play through us at times, which is totally normal in football. But I thought we did well in spells, and our character and energy was good. But yeah, when you lose a game, it's very hard to explain.
> "The only thing that's going to make us come back into it is to get a few wins. But we have to keep working, to keep trusting each other, and yeah, be together in this."
Man Utd return to Premier League action on Sunday when they face Leeds United at Elland Road. United are currently on a five-match winless run in all competitions and will be desperate to end that streak.
