Coming off a 2-2 draw against FC Augsburg over the weekend, Bayern Munich did not have the response fans must have expected as they stumbled to a 3-3 draw against Viking FK in the Champions League. Head coach Vincent Kompany saw similarities between both games, as Bayern failed to convert resilient performances into results.
> “We were very much on top, just as we were at the weekend. There are certainly aspects of our performance that we can take positives from, and the overall quality of our play wasn’t that bad. But we keep making concentration errors and aren’t making smart enough decisions in these moments,” said Kompany (as captured via @iMiaSanMia ). He continued, “Against Augsburg, we conceded after just eight seconds; today, it was after a minute and a half. In that situation, we didn’t necessarily have to play the ball out from the back following the corner. We could perhaps have opted for the long ball instead. We knew that, too, but there was a bit of overconfidence involved. At the moment, it feels as though every chance our opponents get ends up in a goal. But that’s no excuse, because we’re the ones creating these situations for ourselves.”
Bayern’s opponents have punished them at every possible turn and it makes sense why Kompany finds this frustrating, but the right takeaway is focused on how Bayern can avoid these slip-ups in the future.
