Bayern Munich has not had the best of starts as club football returned last weekend, and their poor form vs. FC Augsburg continued on to the Champions League as relative minnows Viking FK punished Bayern and held them to a 3-3 draw.
Speaking after the game, head coach Vincent Kompany lamented the team’s mistakes and Michael Olise’s red card, which rules him out for next week’s blockbuster fixture against Arsenal FC.
> “It was entirely our own fault. The second yellow card for Olise was obviously a stupid mistake. We addressed that very clearly as well,” said Kompany (as captured via @iMiaSanMia ). He continued, “What’s important to me, though, is that I don’t see any lack of energy in my team. The players are working hard, and they’re mentally switched on, too. Nevertheless, we simply cannot afford to make these kinds of mistakes. Otherwise, it becomes difficult to win games, even when you’re clearly the better team and have perhaps put in a decent performance over the course of the entire match. But when you make individual mistakes like these, which we bring upon ourselves, the final picture naturally looks very different.”
Kompany’s assessment is very accurate: Bayern has indeed made far too many mistakes far too often over the last two games. Fans will hope that this trend ends soon, as Bayern cannot afford any more slip-ups.
