Bayern Munich’s 3-3 draw with Viking in the Champions League was an aggravating one for the Bavarians. For one, they were household favorites. Furthermore, though, the team had successfully managed to move past a terrible first half performance to turn a 0-2 deficit into a 3-2 lead by the 71st minute through a Luis Díaz goal. The win seemed certain.
Then Michael Olise earned two yellow cards in 10 seconds, the second by throwing the ball into the face of Viking captain Zlatko Tripic. This moment of petulance did not come out of nowhere, as the Norway international had been fouling and badgering Olise, among other players, throughout the match.
Bayern supervisory board member for sport Max Eberl called this out after the match — but also acknowledged there were far better ways to react to Tripic’s taunts.
> “[Zlatko Tripić] played like a scumbag,” Eberl exclaimed (as captured by @iMiaSanMia ). “He wanted to win the game. We fell for his provocation and he got what he wanted by getting one of our players sent off.”
The reporter followed up by asking if Olise would be fined for his dismissal. Eberl was unwilling to commit to a decision yet, though:
> “We”ll discuss that calmly,” he replied instead.
