It was all going so much better. Bayern Munich traveled to Viking Stars as the overwhelming favorites, only to get sucker punched and finding themselves down 2-0 at half-time. After that truly dreadful, shambolic first half performance, Bayern did manage to recover and had managed to claw back the deficit through two Harry Kane goals before even taking the lead through Luis Díaz in the 71st minute. This was the time for the Bavarians to finally take control of the match and decide it for themselves.
Then Michael Olise made a really, really, really bad decision. It did not seem so bad when he initially dragged back defender Henrik Heggheim to prevent a counter from the hosts. But then the Frenchman picked up the ball and threw it into forward Zlatko Tripic’s face. This followed a frustrating afternoon in which Olise had been fouled and badgered by the Norway international, which had clearly incensed the former Crystal Palace player.
Nevertheless, the petulant act saw Olise awarded a second yellow card within 10 seconds and sent off for the first time in his professional career, which has spanned multiple years at Reading FC, Crystal Palace and of course Bayern. Furthermore, this red card removed any of Bayern’s momentum, saw the Norwegian hosts throw men forward and find a late equalizer to rip the win away from the Bavarians.
It was a poor, unnecessary mistake from Olise that he needs to make sure never happens again. His moment of madness cost Bayern the win.
