Atletico 2-0 Man Utd: Mark Clattenburg’s Verdict on Leny Yoro’s Red Card

Leny Yoro was sent off during Manchester United's Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid, but was it justified?

Former referee Mark Clattenburg has given his immediate verdict on whether Manchester United's Leny Yoro deserved to be sent off vs Atletico Madrid.

The Red Devils were beaten in the Spanish capital on matchday two of the UEFA Champions League season, with Pablo Barrios and Ademola Lookman scoring the goals in a 2-0 triumph.

With the visitors already a goal down, Yoro was given his marching orders after being judged to have taken down Jonathan David, who could have been through on goal otherwise.

The decision has been met with some confusion and a lot of rage from Man Utd supporters. Alan Shearer claimed the decision to send off Yoro was soft, as there was minimal contact with the Atletico forward.

Clattenburg, also on Amazon Prime's coverage of the European contest, agreed with the former England striker. The referee didn't initially show the red card, but VAR were quick to check the incident.

As the VAR review went on, Clattenburg stated: "It would be extremely soft but he's put his arm across. I just think he's gone down very, very easily. UEFA said at the start of the season that it has to be a clear and obvious error. I don't believe this is."

> "There is an arm across the shoulder, but that contact is very, very slight. I don't think this deserves a red card."

Among a sea of disgruntled Man Utd fans was iconic defender Rio Ferdinand. The retired centre-back was livid with Yoro's dismissal, and let everyone know about it.

Taking to X immediately after the controversial decision, Ferdinand posted: "What a load of bollos. Never a red card. SOFT. Yoro should be proud of his performance tonight. Him + Martinez forming good partnership."

It's now five games without a win for Michael Carrick, who could come under pressure sooner rather than later if the Red Devils' form doesn't improve. Following Saturday's draw against Tottenham, the club were still inclined to stick with their former midfielder.
