Man Utd Fans Rip Into Ace Who ‘Must Leave’ With Michael Carrick - He Was a ‘Disaster’ vs Atletico
Following a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night, there aren't too many at Manchester United who can escape criticism.
Given the chance to turn things around at the Wanda Metropolitano, it took less than a minute for questions over Michael Carrick's future to come flooding back as Pablo Barrios put Diego Simeone's men one goal to the good.
United were unable to turn the tide and conceded another late on to Ademola Lookman following Leny Yoro's sending off. The midweek defeat leaves them having to look back to September 10 for their last victory in any competition, as they languish in 13th place in the Premier League and winless in five.
While Carrick appears to be running out of time and patience in what has become known as football's most stressful job, though, some of his supporters have also singled out a player they believe should join him in the firing line and be shown the door in January.
It's no coincidence that no manager in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era has survived more than two full seasons at Old Trafford, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's spell between 2018 and 2021 making him the club's longest-serving manager during that period.
That's partly because many of the players managers are handed to work with simply aren't up to scratch. In the eyes of some fans, one such player is Argentina international Lisandro Martinez, who can show flashes of brilliance but lacks the consistency needed to shore up United's backline. Reacting to his performance, one X user remarked:
> "Insisting on playing Lisandro Martinez every game is a stackable offense in and of itself. Get this bum outta here."
Another user, reacting to the 28-year-old's role in the early opener as he failed to react quick enough to Atletico's attack, added: "Lisandro Martinez is so embarrassing." Elsewhere, a third labelled him 'the problem' as a fourth wrote: "He's cost us so many points."
Others also put further pressure on Carrick as calls for him to step down as manager grow louder, while a fifth user concluded: "Manchester United should sell Lisandro Martinez at the end of the season. He has cost us so many points. He is now a disaster to the team."
Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the vastly unpopular Glazers' family appeared to have finally found the man capable of steering the ship when they appointed Carrick on an interim basis back in January.
Huge improvements were made off the back of Ruben Amorim's tumultuous reign, with no manager winning more Premier League points than the retired midfielder from his appointment until the end of the campaign.
The feel-good factor was well and truly back at Old Trafford, and the United hierarchy had no choice but to appoint him on a long-term basis after securing a return to Champions League football against all odds. However, now that the honeymoon period is over, things have once again looked dire at the start of the 2026/27 term.
The Red Devils' boss is feeling the pressure just six games into the 2026/27 campaign.
All things must pass, or so the famous saying goes. But for Manchester United, it seems the good times are always fleeting, with any glimmer of hope rarely lasting long before things turn bad, and then downright ugly.
With the hectic winter period now just over the horizon, it is looking increasingly likely that the club's hierarchy will have to make yet another difficult - and rather embarrassing - decision to pull the trigger on another managerial change. And, with 21 potential successors already being touted as next in line for his job, the rumour mill is showing signs of turning soon enough.
