Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville makes an eye-opening request to his employers following the game at Anfield
Gary Neville has made an eye-opening demand to Sky Sports after Manchester City’s emphatic 3-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
City maintained their perfect start to the 2026-27 Premier League campaign thanks to three second-half goals in 13 minutes from Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki.
This was City’s first match since an independent commission found the club guilty on all 115 counts of financial rule breaches in the Premier League between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons.
Man City have lodged an official appeal against the ruling but, in the meantime, the club’s comprehensive win over Liverpool highlights the enormous problem the Premier League have on their hands.
“They’re the best team but there’s no way Manchester City can be allowed to win the league,” Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports. “There’s no way this can carry on until the end of the season because we’re all getting kidded.”
English football's biggest scandal takes another twist.
Carragher’s colleague Neville, the former Manchester United captain, provided co-commentary and analysis on Sunday’s Premier League clash at Anfield.
However, the 51-year-old admits he’d rather avoid working on Man City games for the foreseeable future.
"This is the first Manchester City game that I have done today since the charges or guilty verdicts were handed out a few weeks ago,” Neville said.
> "We were just doing the podcast and said if you could take me off Manchester City games moving forward for the next few months until the verdicts have been heard, I would be absolutely delighted.
> "To come and win at Anfield is really difficult, we should be eulogising over them without a but or any hesitation, but there is that thing in the back of your mind.”
He added: “At the end of the game it’s quite hard because you are imagining basically if these guilty verdicts are confirmed in January or February then Manchester City are not going to be in the position they are in and there is going to be a huge cloud hanging over the whole league.
> “This is not good for the Premier League right now and that is what I have just recognised today. Really bad for the Premier League and it is going to continue for a few months."
Neville referenced his podcast , on which he said: “That’s the first Manchester City game I’ve done since this came out and it does feel different. There is a ‘but’, there is a shadow hanging over it, there is a dark cloud that you know has got a load of rain in it and a massive storm, and you just don’t know when it’s going to burst - but you know it’s coming. It’s not good for anyone, really.
> “We get told what games to do [by Sky Sports], but I’d prefer not to do Manchester City games for the next two or three months, being honest with you, and that’s never been the case for the past 10-12 months because I’ve always admired them enormously because of the football I’ve seen.”
City will aim to continue to block out the outside noise as they prepare to face Paris Saint-Germain and Ipswich Town in the Champions League and Premier League, respectively, this week.
