Liverpool 0-3 Man City: Piers Morgan Slams ‘Total Farce’ in Strong Verdict
· GiveMeSport
Piers Morgan has slammed Manchester City and Erling Haaland for celebrating their victory over Liverpool.
Piers Morgan didn't like what he saw from Manchester City in their 3-0 win over 10-man Liverpool and he has called it a 'total farce.'
City were able to celebrate an emphatic victory in their first game since being found guilty of serious breaches of the Premier League's financial rules . They headed to Anfield anticipating a hostile atmosphere, but they braved the storm and made the most of their one-man advantage.
After Ryan Gravenberch received a second yellow in the 62nd minute, the game completely changed and Erling Haaland opened the scoring with a superb finish three minutes later. Jeremy Doku produced a rocket in the 68th minute before Rayan Cherki netted his side's third 10 minutes later.
City fans took inflatable bananas to Anfield and made clear they stood by their owners in the fight against the independent commission's rulings. They celebrated with a Poznan before and after the game and their players lapped it up while manager Enzo Maresca jumped with joy towards his coaching staff at the final whistle.
Watching a club that have been found guilty of breaching financial regulations, was a sore sight for many English football fans. That included Morgan, who hit out at the visitors' reaction to winning in the midst of the biggest scandal in British sporting history.
Morgan wrote on X: "Sorry, but this is a total farce. Manchester City players, and fans, celebrating wildly like nothing has happened - despite the club being exposed as the worst cheats in football history. What happens if they win the title again this season? That could ruin the Premier League."
The British broadcaster, an Arsenal fan, has been one of the most vocal media personalities about City's rule breaking. In another tweet he urged the Premier League to "act asap and announce City’s punishment" because "this cannot go on."
Morgan particularly took issue with Haaland's antics post-match as the Norweigan striker wore a smile. He wrote: "Let’s see how smug he looks when City get relegated. As they should already have been."
City may well be fighting for their status in the top-flight in the courtroom, but on the pitch they are making the perfect start to the post-Pep Guardiola era. Their win over Liverpool means they have won all six of their opening league games and lead Arsenal at the top of the table by three points.
Haaland has inevitably made another red-hot start to a Premier League campaign and he's taken his tally to eight goals in as many games. Prior to the game, he had talked up the prospect of an angry reception from the Kop and reaffirmed his love for City and their fans.
After scoring in today's victory, he spoke to Sky Sports about sharing the moment with his club's fanbase: "Every single person part of Man City and every single fan, this is a lovely moment which will stay with us for a long time when it comes to the feeling after the game, and in the game... I am so proud of everyone."
It's been a difficult few weeks for City fans since the commission's findings were released, as nobody knows what the future holds for the club. Talk of potential relegation, expulsion and even the removal of their Abu Dhabi ownership has been hard to ignore.
The Arsenal fan has made his feelings very clear.
Despite beating Liverpool, the consensus among the football media is that it's hard to take the top-flight seriously, with the club sitting at the top of the league having been deemed cheaters. That's why many, like Morgan, want the situation resolved as soon as possible, because there's a good chance Maresca's men will challenge for a title and end up in the lower tier of English football.
