Man Utd Make Michael Carrick Sack Decision After Tottenham Draw

Manchester United have reached a decision over Carrick's future amid the club's worst start to a season since 1986

Manchester United have already made a decision over Michael Carrick’s future following Saturday’s disappointing 1-1 home draw against Tottenham.

The Red Devils are currently languishing 12th in the Premier League table, having won just one of their opening six league fixtures.

United were outplayed by struggling Tottenham for large parts of Saturday’s clash at Old Trafford. However, Bryan Mbeumo’s well-taken goal in the 73rd minute left Carrick’s men on the verge of an important victory.

Five minutes later, Spurs were reduced to 10 men when Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for violent conduct, making the hosts’ task seemingly more straightforward.

But Roberto De Zerbi’s men battled on and secured a precious point thanks to Dominic Solanke’s clever header in stoppage-time.

Michael Carrick is under increasing pressure after yet another poor performance by Manchester United.

It was another blow for the beleaguered Carrick, who signed a two-year contract to become Man Utd’s permanent head coach in May following an excellent spell as interim boss.

United have now endured their worst start to a season for 40 years. Six points after six games is the club’s lowest tally in a league campaign since 1986 - the season in which Sir Alex Ferguson replaced Ron Atkinson.

The Old Trafford faithful expressed their frustration with boos during the boos during the game, plus at half-time and full-time.

> "Obviously, it hurts, you know, it hurts a lot," Carrick said of the boos in his post-match press conference. "It's not nice to go through, but sometimes you have to go through it.

> "That's how it is, you know. It's coming from a good place, really, and so I understand it."

Despite the club’s unconvincing form under Carrick, the former England international will still be in charge for Tuesday’s Champions League trip to Atletico Madrid.

That’s according to TEAMtalk, who are reporting that Man Utd have decided not to sack the 45-year-old for the time being.

INEOS are continuing to back Carrick and are not planning to change their stance, as things stand.

Before the game against Tottenham, TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey said on YouTube:

> “The message from the club, they don’t think they have played too badly.

> “Clearly being in 12th at this point isn’t ideal, but they weren’t putting the pressure on him to have a title charge this season.

> “It was more of a top-four finish, but again, that’s looking a bit of a stretch so far, but we are only five games in, and things could be a lot worse.

> “Look at their opponents on Saturday; things could be a lot worse for him.

> “But no, the message coming from Old Trafford at the moment is he’s not under pressure.”

Bailey said the situation “may look a bit different come Monday morning” if Tottenham went to Old Trafford and won the match.

However, sources have confirmed to TEAMtalk that Carrick is under no immediate danger of losing his job at Manchester United despite Saturday’s underwhelming draw with Spurs.

That said, the pressure on Carrick’s shoulders could intensify depending on how United’s next two games against Atletico (Tuesday) and Leeds United (Sunday, October 18) go.
