Man Utd Given Chance to Sign Alphonso Davies for £55m

Manchester United are said to have the chance to sign a Luke Shaw replacement for £55million.

Manchester United will have to pay a significant fee if they want to sign reported left-back target Alphonso Davies . Michael Carrick will have wanted to sign a left-back in the summer, but they did not manage to get their hands on one.

Luke Shaw is the only senior natural left-back, with Patrick Dorgu also able to play there, but it is not his natural position, while there are also inexperienced and young options. Such a lack of depth would be a problem at the best of times, but Shaw is 31 years of age and particularly injury prone, so United's lack of depth is that much more concerning.

Whether the Red Devils will have to attempt to get away with that shortcoming until January, but trying go get away with it until the summer is surely not an option if their ambition is to compete for another top four finish and to do well in the Champions League.

One potential option is Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies, who has been a reliable left-back for the German giants over the last seven years. Davies is under contract until 2030 and only 25 years of age, but there are whispers he could be sold.

Davies does have a rather colourful injury history, often struggling with muscular issues, which might give clubs like United pause for thought, especially with the issues Shaw has had.

According to Fussball News , Bayern will start talks at around €50million but won't likely sell for below €60million, while they would prefer to bring in €65million (£55m), even if it is with the help of add-ons.

> “Alphonso is simply an incredible athlete. That means that even when he comes back, and he’s still not at 100 percent, he’s probably still the fastest in the squad and it looks like he never gets tired. That’s not normal when you’re coming back from such a long injury.” – Vincent Kompany

That's a steep asking price for Davies, but he is still only 25 years of age, and he is a uniquely experienced player at the very top end of the game. The Canadian international has won seven Bundesliga titles, a Champions League title and many more.

That kind of experience and knowhow comes at a price, even for a player who has had some struggles with injury.

United will know they need to spend to address their left-back position, which is insufficient currently, but how much they are willing to spend is another question.

Top players demand top prices, and signing those top players is likely to be the difference in United taking the next step or remaining a side that often finds itself fighting to get into the top four from the outside.
