Nobody saw this coming...
Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has been linked with a shock move away from Napoli in 2027.
The Scotland international made the move to Serie A in the summer of 2024, and immediately made himself a hero in Naples as he led the team to the Scudetto title in his first season with the club.
He has gone on to score 27 goals in 82 appearances for the club, but the 29-year-old is beginning to see his life in Italy take a turn for the worse, with the media starting to turn on him.
Journalist Paolo Esposito recently stated that McTominay was getting "too big" for Napoli , after making demands of €9m per season to renew his contract in Naples, while he also claimed that the praise for the midfielder has been 'exaggerated' by fans who got carried away by some performances.
Now, it has emerged that a move away from Italy could be on the cards, with a shock destination emerging a possible option.
According to a report by Il Matino, via The Sun , Real Madrid are eyeing up a move for McTominay after his performances caught the eye of club chiefs.
Los Blancos have already made contact with the former Man Utd star's representatives about a move that would take him to the Bernabeu and reunite him with Jose Mourinho , who handed him his debut at Old Trafford.
Madrid are looking to take advantage of the current contract standoff between McTominay and Napoli, with the midfielder having just two years remaining on his deal at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.
McTominay returned to training during the international break after missing around two months following a heart procedure in September.
Mourinho already has an abundance of midfield options to choose from in Aurelien Tchouameni, Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga, Bernardo Silva, and Thiago Pitarch, but he was always a huge fan of McTominay during their time together in Manchester.
Speaking in 2018, the iconic Portuguese coach said:
> "Scott McTominay is a kid with a special character, very humble, aggressive in a positive way, brave, he's a special kid.
> "He's a special character, a special personality that a team in a negative moment needs."
There is no fee mooted for any deal, but it's a situation to keep a close eye on in the coming months, with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis not believed to be prioritising a renewal for the Scot.
The Scotland international is now in his third full season since moving away from Manchester United in 2024.
