Jose Mourinho's Typical Answer When Asked About Man City Charges
· GiveMeSport
Jose Mourinho gave the most Jose Mourinho answer when asked about the Man City guilty charges.
Over the years, Jose Mourinho has made many a headline with his sharp-tongued comments in the media. Beyond all the trophies he's won, when all is said and done in the 63-year-old's career, he will perhaps be best remembered for his press conference quips.
With that in mind, it's no surprise to learn that he dropped a typical Mourinho response when quizzed about Manchester City's guilty charges. The Etihad club have been guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules between 2009 and 2018.
While City have appealed the ruling, many expect the English club to face huge sanctions. One punishment could see them stripped of past titles , but it remains to be seen just how long before any action is taken.
Not everyone would be satisfied with that.
It's taken years for Man City to be found guilty. After all, the club was charged in 2023 – for actions between 2009 and 2018 – and then a 10-week hearing took place in September 2024.
Referencing that in a recent interview with Corriere dello Sport, via Goal, Mourinho joked that he would be 80 before any punishment is actually dished out. He said:
> "Manchester City? I’d rather have a bit of a laugh about it. I think that we will reach a conclusion but, being in my sixties, I will have to be lucky enough still to be here when the final verdict arrives. Now a ruling will come, then an appeal… I’ll be 80."
Man City have indeed appealed the ruling and it's unclear when fans can expect to hear the outcome of that action. In the meantime, Enzo Maresca's men will carry on with their season, travelling to Anfield to face Liverpool in their next Premier League outing.
Mourinho has commented on the Man City situation before. Unsurprisingly, he didn't hold back as he made some rather damning claims about Pep Guardiola .
In 2024, the pair clashed, prompting the current Real Madrid boss to say:
> "Pep Guardiola said something to me yesterday... He won six trophies and I won three, but I won fairly and cleanly. > > "I don't want to win by dealing with 150 lawsuits. If I lost, I want to congratulate my opponent."
If Man City were to be stripped of any titles won since the 2008 takeover, Mourinho could actually win a belated Premier League trophy . In 2017/18, he led Manchester United to second in the division, although they finished 19 points behind Guardiola's side.
Beyond that, Man United may also feel entitled to the 2011/12 title, when Sir Alex Ferguson lost out to Man City on the final day of the season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also finished second behind the Cityzens in 2020/21, but that season is not currenlty under investigation for Premier League rule breaches.
It certainly will be fascinating to see what punishments the Etihad outfit are hit with if their appeal is unsuccessful. Beyond titles being stripped, there has been talk of expulsion from the Premier League , point deductions, huge fines, transfer bans and even their owners being forced to sell.
