Better Than Zirkzee: Man Utd Make Contact to Sign Christian Kofane

Man Utd have made contact over a deal for an exciting striker prospect who would be better than Joshua Zirkzee.

Manchester United have had a slow start to the season so far, and there is a strong feeling that Michael Carrick has been let down by INEOS.

The Red Devils has put in some decent performances but their lack of cutting edge in attack, and their leakiness in defence has seen them pick up just one win in the Premier League from their opening five games, while they were also eliminated from the EFL Cup by Brighton at Old Trafford.

Carrick has clearly got a preferred set of players, and one who doesn't factor into that is striker Joshua Zirkzee. The Netherlands star was on the verge of an exit for much of the summer window, but a move to Serie A collapsed, before a late move to Everton was blocked as there was no time for a replacement to be found.

But despite Benjamin Sesko dealing with a number of fitness-related issues this season, Carrick has continued to rely on Zirkzee solely as a substitute so far, with both Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo chosen ahead of him as centre-forwards, despite it not being their preferred roles.

A move away in January looks likely to be something that is revisited, and Man Utd are now making their plans for the transfer window to identify a replacement.

According to reports in Germany, via Sport Witness , United are the latest club to enter the race for Bayer Leverkusen sensation Christian Kofane, with contact made with the player's representatives to understand the terms of a potential deal.

Kofane impressed for Leverkusen last season in the Bundesliga and Champions League , and was targeted by a number of clubs during the summer. But the Cameroon striker rejected moves to Everton, Newcastle, and Aston Villa, in favour of staying with Leverkusen.

But United have now put their hat in the mix after it emerged that renewal talks have stalled, and a January move cannot be ruled out while no new contract has been signed.

Kofane burst onto the scene with Leverkusen in 2025, and has already shown a brilliant level of quality despite being just 20 years old.

The Cameroon international is a powerful forward with great speed, an excellent eye for goal, and a great ability to bring his teammates into play. These are all attributes that would work well at Man Utd, considering the forward options that would be around him, but he is also clearly very coachable.

While commenting on a Kofane performance in December 2025, scout Jacek Kulig was blown away by his quality.

Getting rid of Zirkzee and bringing in Kofane would be a positive for Man Utd, with his profile more like Sesko's and making for a better like-for-like replacement should he continue to suffer with injuries.

Zirkzee is on borrowed time at Old Trafford at this stage, and Kofane could well become a leading striker in the future.
