Man City 60-point deduction discussed as demand for stronger punishment made to Premier League

Manchester City appealed their guilty verdict last week and have doubled down on their innocence.

TalkSPORT host Alan Brazil claims he's heard Manchester City could be getting a 60-point deduction after being found guilty of breaching the Premier League's financial regulations. The independent commission found City guilty of all but one of the charges brought by the Premier League.

Although the club have appealed the original guilty verdict, that ruling has resulted in speculation about what punishment the City could face. There's been ongoing discussions about fines, relegations, points deductions and expulsion since the charges first came to light.

Now, however, Brazil says he's been told by two separate sources that City could be set for a 60-point deduction, which would all but ensure they're relegated.

Speaking on his talkSPORT breakfast show, Brazil said: "This might be nonsense but two different sources have told me this, we're talking about Man City here and people are saying 'what's going to happen?'

> "I tell you what I've heard and people can shoot me down in flames, it might be nonsense right so I'm not saying I got it first, none of that rubbish.

> "I'm hearing 60 point deduction. Six-zero point deduction which will please people and still give City a chance of survival. I don't know if it's this season, I can't see how it can be this season, because by the time they get it though it'll be too late.

> "They're talking about a 60 point deduction, does that make any sense to you?"

The points deduction touted by former Manchester United striker, Brazil, would be the biggest in Premier League history, but still would not guarantee City are relegated.

Fellow pundit Ally McCoist felt the reported 60-point deduction wouldn't be strict enough and feels clubs will push for tougher sanctions.

McCoist said: "I think a lot of people wouldn’t think that’s enough. Obviously we’ll have to wait and see how this appeal goes.

> "If they didn’t win the appeal, I think people would be looking for a stronger punishment than that."

Man City released a statement last week confirming they'd appealed the guilty verdict, and now the world of football is awaiting the result.

The club statement read: "Manchester City Football Club can confirm that at 7pm on Thursday 1st October 2026 the Club lodged its comprehensive Appeal against the opinion of the Premier League Commission, in relation to the Premier League disciplinary matter.

> "The Club’s firm position is that, on multiple grounds, the opinion contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact and is unsafe.

> "The Club is innocent of the accusations made by the Premier League and a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence exists in support of all of its positions, relating to this case.

> "We will continue to respect due process and are necessarily restricted in what we can say further until all proceedings are complete."
