Roberto Mancini is off to a pretty good start in his return to the Italy bench, as the Azzurri righted the ship and sit in second place after four Nations League matches despite the initial slip-up against Belgium. The gaffer introduced a few talents in his previous spell and continues to do so at a breakneck pace, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.
In fact, the number of youngsters who debuted under him almost matches the amount of games he spent in the national team dugout: 64 in 65. He added a few more during the most recent contests: Alessandro Romano, Issa Doumbia, Michael Kayode, Sebastiano Esposito, Matteo Ruggeri, Antonio Vergara, and Mohamed Alì Zoma. They all held their own for the most part.
Instead, a few more who made the squad for the first time, Honest Ahanor, Eddy Kouadio and Samuel Inacio, will have to wait until November to possibly play their maiden match with the senior team. Not deploying the last two exposes them to Côte d'Ivoire and Brazil's call-ups, though. Mancini would have selected even more talents if Italy U-21 didn't need them to qualify for the European Championship.
Alphadjo Cissè, Niccolò Pisilli, Cher Ndour, and Antonio Raimondo are next in line. A couple of them already saw some action with the Azzurri in June when Silvio Baldini was the caretaker manager.
Our Take on Mancini and Italy
It's too early for definitive judgments, but the players showed more unity, tactical cohesion, spirit, and chutzpah than in the final stretch of his previous reign and the ensuing ones with different coaches. Most of the starlets are destined to stick around, as their quality and energy are manifest.
