Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer Agree About Liverpool Transfer Target Alex Scott

The 23-year-old made his first England start in the 7-0 win against Croatia

Liverpool are one of the Premier League clubs linked with a move for Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott in recent days, with Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer issuing their verdict on the 23-year-old following his first England start against Croatia.

Scott was part of the Three Lions' group as part of their 2026 World Cup preparations back in June, but he ultimately narrowly missed out on a place in Thomas Tuchel's final 26-man squad.

However, the Cherries star has got his head down and continued to perform for his club in the Premier League, and was rewarded with his first England start in Rijeka on Saturday, although it has ended with a potential two-month absence through injury.

It turned out to be a memorable cap for the Guernsey-born star though, as he played his part in the 7-0 demolition of Croatia, who were World Cup semi-finalists just four years ago.

Scott didn't get a goal contribution himself, but he was heavily involved in the build-up to a couple of goals, while he was excellent in possession generally as he showed his ability to know where his next pass was going before he even received the ball.

The BBC reported last week that Liverpool are one of a number of top six Premier League sides who hold an interest in Scott, who is looking more and more likely to leave Bournemouth in 2027 after already rejecting two rounds of contract offers from the south coast outfit.

The Cherries have made it clear that the midfielder won't be leaving the Vitality Stadium in January, but it could be a different story in the summer if they fail to agree new terms with him before then, with Chelsea and Arsenal also circling.

Alex Scott vs Croatia

- Minutes 70 - Touches 81 - Accurate passes 68/74 - Pass accuracy 92% - Accurate long balls 3/5 - Defensive contributions 5 - Tackles 3 - Recoveries 3 - Duels won 4/6

The report also adds that Reds boss Andoni Iraola has a strong relationship with Scott from their time together at Bournemouth, which could give them an advantage if they choose to up their interest.

What is clear is that he is highly-rated by his peers, Tuchel and various pundits, including Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards.

Speaking on the latest Rest is Football podcast following England's demolition of Croatia, Lineker, Shearer and Richards all agreed after what they had seen from Scott in his full Three Lions bow.

Lineker said: > "What an assured performance! I watched him quite closely because we can argue it's one game. It's against a team that didn't play very well on the night, and England were really good. > > "But he was very much part of that game. And the one thing, you can look at perhaps the great teams that win competitions, they have control in a game, and I think that is a player that I don't think we've necessarily seen within that England midfield. > > "He's always scanning. I noticed a lot of that, and in the right way. So I was really impressed. And I mean, what a very, very confident start."

Shearer added: > "I think it's very early. He was brilliant, albeit against an ageing Croatian side. But when you take all that into account, he was superb, and it gives the manager another option. I think that's a good thing, and I don't think he's had too many in those positions."

Richards said: > "I don't think he played to the best of his ability. I think he's got way more. But what he did need to do and keep the ball, keep it moving, dropping his shoulders, awareness of what round him is just magnificent. He's going to be England's future for sure. I think he's that good. > > "The interesting thing is, he knew exactly what he was going to do when the ball was coming. Before the ball was coming to him, he'd already scanned where he wanted the pass to go, and that is the subtle difference. I think he's marvelous."

Liverpool now have a big decision to make, as it seems pretty certain they will sign a new central midfielder in the summer.

The Merseyside outfit didn't replace Curtis Jones in the summer, while Alexis Mac Allister has suggested that he won't be getting a new contract unless the club change their stance in the coming months.

The Reds' interest in Scott is no surprise given they have the manager who he thrived under at Bournemouth, but they have other targets too.

GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Ben Jacobs revealed that Liverpool told Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara that he was high on their shortlist for 2027 on deadline day, ahead of his move to Chelsea collapsing at the 11th hour.

As well as Scott and Camara, there has been some talk also that they are in contact with Aurelien Tchouameni's camp, even though the France international has only just agreed a new contract at Real Madrid.

Liverpool need to decide what profile of player they need to enhance their midfield, but what is clear is that Scott has very much put himself in the shop window with his displays for club and country.
