Manchester City may have had the perfect start to their season with seven wins from seven games in all competitions, but things are not all rosy.
The Cityzens sit top of the Premier League with a 100% record, while they also defeated Norwich City in the EFL Cup third round, and FC Porto in the Champions League . But they have been found guilty of 114 charges for financial breaches between 2009 and 2018 , and they are now facing severe sanctions, which could see points deducted and even them being kicked out of football entirely .
That has led to plenty of speculation over the future of some star players heading into 2027, with any penalties likely to see some move on if they are severe enough.
A number of players have been heavily linked with moves away already, but there is one star who has been tipped to stay put no matter what, and that's academy sensation Phil Foden.
The 26-year-old playmaker recently signed a new long-term contract at the Etihad to tie him to his boyhood club until 2030, which would take him beyond his 30th birthday. So far in his career, the left-footed wizard has played 375 times for City, scoring 110 goals, and winning six Premier League titles, a Champions League, three FA Cups, and five League Cups.
He's been a key member of the squad in the last few years especially, but his form over the last two seasons has dropped off a cliff in disappointing fashion.
After scoring 27 goals in all competitions during the 2023/24 season as City won the league and he put the team on his back, Foden has struggled since. The following campaign saw him net just 13 times in all competitions with Liverpool winning the title, while last season he could only score 10 times as Arsenal lifted the trophy.
That form has seen him lose his spot in the England squad since Euro 2024 too. Since 2025, Foden has made just six appearances for England, missing the World Cup, and he was also left out of the most recent squads by Thomas Tuchel.
After the Three Lions claimed a dominant 7-0 win in Croatia this week, it now seems that it could be a long while before we ever see him back in the fold.
England have been blessed by an abundance of talented playmakers in recent years, with the likes of Cole Palmer, Eberechi Eze, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Jude Bellingham all in the setup currently. There is also the next generation of talent beginning to come through too, with the likes of Max Dowman and Rio Ngumoha already knocking on the door in attacking positions.
Foden has shown that he has incredible talent and quality, but he has struggled to really assert himself in recent times, and it feels like he needs something new to kickstart his career again.
At Man City he is behind Rayan Cherki, Antoine Semenyo, and Jeremy Doku in the attacking pecking order when everyone is fit, and with the club facing a big punishment, it's very likely that he is set to face a major crossroads - stay with them in the wake of any punishment, or make that move.
Making the move away could be his ticket back into the conversation among the top players in his position, while staying could see him bring down the curtain on a top career at the highest level.
A reason for their stance has also been given.
