Scott McTominay: Italian Media React as His Life at Napoli Takes Twist
· GiveMeSport
What Italian media are saying about ex-Man Utd star Scott McTominay as his life at Napoli takes major twist
It’s been more than two years since Scott McTominay left Manchester United behind, finding newfound solace in the shape of Napoli, where he was named Serie A Player of the Year in his first season.
The Scotland international had seemingly turned his career right around, given that he also lifted the Scudetto in his first campaign in Italy, scoring 12 goals and producing a further three assists from midfield. It’s safe to say he’s moved well past the dreaded days when he was one half of the punchline in a joke about the McFred duo at Old Trafford.
But how is the 29-year-old doing in his third full season at the club? It feels like a long time since there was any update on McTominay, almost as if everyone had become accustomed to the fact that he’s doing quite alright.
However, recent talk from the Italian media would suggest otherwise, with the waters beginning to look a little less calm around his name.
There are very few parts of the world more emotional than Naples, and while McTominay's performances were held in very high regard just last season, it would appear some of his career turnaround has gotten to his head.
Well, that's according to many outlets, who have criticised his demands for a new contract, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the 2027/28 season. Journalist Paolo Esposito wrote, as per AreaNapoli :
> “ Too much praise in Naples for this Scot! He’s gotten too big for it, and now he’s asking for £9m to renew his contract. Have you already forgotten that you’ve become someone, an important player in Naples and with Napoli!”
The same journalist also issued a dig to the Scotsman for being a substitute during his Manchester United spell.
> “Dear Scott McTominay? In Manchester, at United, you were a supporting player, a reserve, a substitute.”
The journalist also expressed his belief that praise for the player has become too much.
> “While it is legitimate for the Azzurri supporters and the media to praise and extol midfielder Scott McTominay, Napoli should not have exaggerated with the praise. A huge mistake was made and these are the consequences in terms of money and new contract.”
According to Get Football News Italy , McTominay is being seen as someone who doesn't deserve the contract demands he has, while the fact he's nearing his 30th birthday means Napoli could decide to cash in on him next summer - their final chance to do so before he ends up seeing out his contract and leaving on a free.
Some reports suggest a return to the Premier League could be on the cards, with Aston Villa among those interested in his signature. Unai Emery's side are in desperate need of midfield reinforcement after sanctioning Youri Tieleman's sale over the summer.
