Tottenham's Mistake: Troy Parrott's Departure in 2024
· GiveMeSport
Tottenham must regret letting Troy Parrott go, as he shines in Spain and for Ireland. Could he have solved Spurs' goal drought?
Tottenham allowed Troy Parrott to leave the club back in 2024, and it's a decision they might be looking back on with plenty of regret, for multiple reasons.
Parrott was identified by Spurs back in 2017, making the move to Spurs from Irish side Belvedere as a youngster.
The Republic of Ireland international was regularly producing for Spurs' academy, eventually making his senior debut in 2019. Parrott then made his professional and Premier League debut later that year under Jose Mourinho, before signing a new three-and-a-half-year contract in February 2020.
Tottenham clearly still had high hopes for Parrott at that time, but after some mixed loan spells, they agreed to sell him to AZ Alkmaar in 2024.
It's incredibly likely that Parrott doesn't regret the decision to leave Spurs, considering how his career has taken off, but do Tottenham regret letting him depart?
Tottenham have a major issue at the moment, and that is creating and scoring goals. Spurs sit bottom of the Premier League table, and they could certainly do with a striker who is able to put away chances regularly.
One player they could regret letting leave the club is Parrott, especially with the form of Dominic Solanke of late. Last season, Parrott scored 31 goals and provided 10 assists for Alkmaar, beating his 20 goals and four assists the campaign before.
That earned him a move to Real Betis, and Spurs had the opportunity to secure his signature again before his move to Spain.
Reports claimed earlier this year that Tottenham were keen on signing Parrott before his move to Real Betis , and he wanted to rejoin the north London club.
Had Tottenham received an offer of £50m+, then it might have made sense to allow Parrott to depart, but when you're struggling to find a centre-forward capable of scoring goals regularly, giving a chance to the Irish striker might have been the answer.
Spurs will be looking to kickstart their season when they return to action after the international break
It was undoubtedly a mistake from Spurs to allow Parrott to depart. It's not only at club level that he's banging the goals in, either.
Parrott, described as 'special' by Heimir Hallgrimsson, has scored nine goals in his last six competitive games for Ireland, including a hat-trick against Hungary and a brace against Portugal.
At the age of 24, he might not have even hit his prime yet either. This should already be a decision that Tottenham look back on with regret, and it could look even worse in a few years.
Spurs had the chance to right their wrongs earlier this year before Parrott made the move to Real Betis, and they could have secured his signature for a fraction of the price they'll be paying Manchester City for Omar Marmoush.
