The Premier League have been urged to hand a never-seen-before punishment to Man City after they were found guilty of 114 charges

Following last week’s bombshell news that Manchester City have been found guilty on all but one of the Premier League’s 115 charges, speculation is rife over what type of punishment fits the crime if their appeal fails.

As things stand, no punishment is currently off the table. A huge fine, hefty points deductions, relegation from the Premier League, and even being kicked out of football altogether are among the outcomes currently being discussed by the media and fans alike.

However, the Premier League have been urged by one former player to hand out a punishment that’s never been seen before.

Ex- England right-back Danny Mills spent five years with Man City between 2004-2009. Nevertheless, he believes a huge points deduction that spans nine separate seasons should be imposed.

The charges City have been found guilty of span from 2009 to 2018 - during which time City won three Premier League titles (2011-12, 2013-14 and 2017-18).

Mills believes the sanctions should mirror that nine-year period, with a 20-point deduction being imposed at the start of every season from next term onwards.

> "People are talking about relegating them to the EFL - we know that they're two separate competitions, two separate bodies," Mills told talkSPORT .

> "I just heard from a fan, 'It would be great for the EFL'. No it wouldn't. City would bounce straight back immediately, which means instead of two spots available for (automatic) promotion (from the Championship), there would only be one.

> "You're only going to play Manchester City twice that season, so you're not going to make huge revenue. You've only got 20,000 people in your stadium, one sell-out is not going to change your whole season in any way, shape or form.

> "You go to City, you're not going to get any money there anyway because it's all home gate receipts.

> "I was listening over the last few days and I think, once everything has settled, realistically the only way going forward to do this is to maybe look at every season that they allegedly cheated.

> "Every season they have cheated, give them a massive points deduction for every season going forward.

> "So if they cheated for nine years, give them a 20-point deduction for the next nine years and see how that goes, see where they get to in that.

> "There is no fair and just system, because it's going so far back retrospectively, and it's going to be very, very difficult because other clubs are going to then complain that they lost out and got relegated, how do you work that out?"

This unique punishment would see City deducted a total of 180 points over the course of the nine seasons.

Here’s where a 20-point deduction would have left City in the Premier League table in each of the past five campaigns:

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the club’s future, City’s players and coaching staff will be expected to remain focused on football.
