Enzo Maresca's agents give cryptic response to Man City 115 charges bombshell

· Mirror

Manchester City boss Enzo Maresca was approached for a response following Manchester City being found guilty of 114 of the financial breaches they were charged with by the Premier League

Enzo Maresca's representatives pointed reporters in the direction of Socrates when asked for a comment on Manchester City being found guilty of 114 Premier League charges relating to financial rule breaking. The verdict of the independent commission has been long-awaited after the hearing in December 2024.

City have maintained their innocence throughout the process and intend to appeal the decision. Maresca took charge of the club over the summer knowing that a decision was looming over the Etihad Stadium.

Asked for a response by The Guardian, Maresca's representatives replied with a screenshot from Maresca's Instragram account. The former Chelsea and Leicester coach had posted on the social media site hours before news emerged of City's guilt.

There, he had quoted the Greek Philosopher Socrates. The quote reads: “The only thing I know is that I know nothing.”

Underneath, Maresca wrote: “Time to breathe. Time to analyse. Time to learn.”

City's official response suggested the process was still ongoing. In a statement, they noted that proceedings should remain strictly confidential.

> “The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality. As such Manchester City FC’s position remains consistent with the club’s statement of February 2023," they said.

> “The club has diligently respected due process for eight years on the basis the Premier League board and executive would behave as an independent, impartial and fair-minded regulator, free from partisan influence.”

The statement released by City back in February 2023 noted that the club were 'surprised' by the Premier League's decision to bring charges. They also said that "The Club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent Commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position".

While City will have the opportunity to appeal, possible sanctions could be decided on a faster timeline. Punishments could range from a fine to a points deduction or even expulsion from the Premier League.

Premier League rivals are also investigating legal action. Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham have already preserved their right to claim compensation due the loss of earnings they suffered due to City's success.

A potential £200million claim in the offing with those clubs reported to be 'planning' to launch an action.
