Liverpool Icon Andy Robertson Reacts To Man City Guilty Verdict
· GiveMeSport
The former Anfield star has given a very honest reaction to the news 🔴🏆
Andy Robertson knows better than most what it's like to go toe-to-toe with Manchester City for major honours. But in light of the now widely-expected verdict that will see City found guilty of almost all the 115 financial rule breaches , the former Liverpool man has shared his thoughts on the shocking revelation.
The Scotland captain made almost 400 appearances for Liverpool before making the switch to Tottenham over the summer. During his successful period at the club, Robertson won nine major honours, including two Premier League titles. But had it not been for Pep Guardiola's imperious Manchester City side, Robertson and Liverpool would have likely added to that haul.
Liverpool finished second behind City in the league on two occasions during Robertson's tenure, in 2019 and 2022. With the potential punishments from a guilty verdict starting to become a bit more possible, the Tottenham star has weighed in on the historic verdict.
There are a number of punishments being discussed in the context of City's multiple breaches . As well as fines and relegation from the Premier League, one potential punishment could see the club stripped of all the titles won during the period in question.
If this were to happen, it could lead to the teams who finished runners-up in league and cup competitions between 2009 and 2018 being promoted to champions retrospectively. For Robertson, this could see the first of his second-place finishes in the Premier League affected, as it occurred during the 2018/19 season.
And whilst Robertson battled fiercely against Guardiola's side during the period, forging a new rivalry between the clubs in the process, the Scotland captain was sympathetic to the players now dealing with the fallout from the verdict.
As quoted by The Guardian whilst on international duty with Scotland, Robertson stated,
> "For me, the players showed they were good enough on the pitch.
> "I don’t know too much about the charges and stuff like that. But they had an incredible team, one that I loved battling against. I don’t think when it comes to these things that players are ever to blame. That’s all I can focus on."
The other major honour falling inside the 2009-2018 window that concerns Liverpool is the 2013/14 season. Liverpool finished second behind City, after dropping their lead at the top late into the season. The heartbreaking campaign occurred three years before Robertson moved to Anfield. Crucially, it would mean that Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard would finally become a Premier League winner.
Interestingly, Manchester United could also be awarded two further league titles for the 2011/12 and 2017/2018 seasons. Assuming Liverpool and United were both retroactively crowned champions, they would remain tied for the most English top-flight titles, with 22 each.
Should Manchester City lose the 'trial of the century', the Reds could be rewarded with silverware.
