Pep Guardiola's Threat to Man City Board About Financial Charges
· GiveMeSport
Pep Guardiola's eye-opening old comments to Man City board about financial charges have resurfaced.
After a long process, Manchester City have been found guilty on 114 of their 115 charges from the Premier League relating to breaching financial fair play rules.
The charges stem from nine years spanning from 2009 to 2018, although some further charges were brought against them up until 2023. The charges were first brought in 2023, with a long process carried out by an independent commission finally ending today after a hearing, which found the Cityzens guilty on the majority of their charges.
Manchester City do have the chance to appeal these charges, but the chance of all 114 being waived is highly unlikely.
Pep Guardiola was manager of the side at the time when these charges were first brought against them, and whilst he remained fairly quiet during the period, some of his older comments have become even more potent following the news today.
Sources: Manchester City are expected to appeal after being found guilty of 114 financial charges by the Premier League.
The comments came in 2022. Speaking about the possible financial breaches, he threatened that he would quit if he found out the board had lied to him . Guardiola said:
> “Why did I defend the club and the people? It’s because I work with them. > > “When they are accused of something I ask them: ‘Tell me about that.’ They explain and I believe them. I said to them: ‘If you lie to me, the day after I am not here. I will be out and I will not be your friend any more. I put my faith in you because I believe you 100% from day one and I defend the club because of that.’"
He also said: > "There is more chance to stay if we are in League One than if we were in Champions League."
His comments have now come to light once again with the news today that City have been found guilty of their 114 charges. A punishment still remains to be seen for the side, but multiple ideas have been floated, ranging from City being stripped of their Premier League titles during the time period they are accused of these charges, or a heavy points deduction and possible relegation to the lower tiers.
However, as the verdict has only come today after a two-year wait, a punishment could still be a long way off, even more so considering that City do have the right to appeal any decisions brought against them.
With the guilty verdicts reportedly being given today, the Premier League or Manchester City are yet to confirm the results and they remain coy on any verdicts.
However, City did refuse to deny reports that the independent panel found them guilty on the charges, as well as declining to say whether they had been informed on any decision.
The club released an official statement today that reads: > "The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and is subject to strict confidentiality. As such, Manchester City FC's position remains consistent with the club's statement of February 2023. > > The Club has diligently respected due process for eight years on the basis that the Premier League Board and Executive would behave as an independent, impartial and fair-minded regulator."
