British PM Andy Burnham Reacts To Man City's Guilty Verdict
· GiveMeSport
British PM Andy Burnham makes statement on stripping Man City of titles after guilty verdict.
Manchester City have been found guilty on 114 of their 115 charges from the Premier League regarding the side breaching the financial fair play rules of the league.
The process has been ongoing for numerous years, with an independent commission put in charge of the case, and the charges were finally decided today. However, appropriate sanctions and punishments are still yet to be decided for Enzo Maresca's side, and it could still be some time until the punishment is known to the footballing world.
The charges were brought against the side in 2023, and following the hearing from the independent commission, they were found guilty. The charges primarily relate to a nine-season period, spanning from 2009 to 2018, but some allegations do extend all the way to 2023. Punishments could be applied to any titles won during that period, or it could be applied to the future, with relegation from the Premier League a possibility.
The outcome of the hearing was released during the afternoon, and United Kingdom Prime Minister Andy Burnham was in an interview with Lise McNally, who was quick to ask Burnham for his thoughts.
However, he remained cautious about what he had to say. "I've only just been made aware of it; they are just reports at this stage. If they are confirmed, then yes I would want to look at the report of the independent commission," he said.
When asked if he believes Manchester City should be stripped of their charges, he said:
> "I would have to look at the report of the independent commission, and people shouldn't jump to those kinds of conclusions.
> "I know it has been a long process between the club and the Premier League, quite a contested process. I don't think its quite as simple as jumping to conclusions. l think we would all need to study the report of the independent commission in some considerable detail before reaching any conclusions."
Unsurprisingly, being found guilty of 114 charges of breaching financial fair play rules will undoubtedly come with heavy consequences for Manchester City, whether it be a large fine or a sporting sanction, such as being relegated from the league, a points deduction or being stripped of previous titles.
What remains unclear is as to how long fans will wait until the punishment is known for Manchester City. It took two years for a guilty verdict to be given, and therefore a punishment could take another substantial amount of time.
Manchester City do have the chance to appeal the charges, which can drag the process out even more, but it will be unlikely for 114 charges to be dropped after an appeal.
Possible punishments have been floated, and it could see some other clubs in the Premier League be awarded the title from the previous years in which Man City won the league.
Several teams could win belated league titles with Man City found guilty over their 115 charges, but Mikel Arteta’s men still wouldn’t get a trophy.
