Manchester City are awaiting punishment from the Premier League after being found guilty of alleged financial breaches
Everything you need to know about the punishments that have been given by the Premier League for clubs that have broken the rules…
- Everton (2023–2024): The Toffees were handed an initial 10-point deduction for breaching Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) after overspending their allowable financial limits, which was reduced to six points on appeal. They were hit with an additional two-point deduction later in the same season for a second PSR breach covering a subsequent monitoring period. - Nottingham Forest (2024): Forest received a four-point deduction in March 2024 for going over their permitted three-year loss threshold under PSR regulations. The penalty was reduced from six points to four in recognition of their full cooperation during the Premier League's investigation process. - Portsmouth (2010): Portsmouth became the first Premier League club to enter financial administration mid-season, resulting in an automatic nine-point deduction. The heavy penalty practically sealed their fate, leading to their eventual relegation from the top flight at the end of the season. - West Ham United (2007): West Ham avoided a sporting points deduction but received a then-record £5.5 million fine for violating regulations surrounding third-party ownership. The rule breaches stemmed from complications regarding the transfers of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano. - The European Super League founders (2021): Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur were collectively fined £22 million by the Premier League for attempting to form a breakaway European Super League. As part of the settlement, the clubs agreed to face a 30-point deduction and a £25 million fine each if they ever made a similar move in the future. - Middlesbrough (1997): Middlesbrough were docked three points and fined £50,000 for failing to fulfil a scheduled fixture against Blackburn Rovers. The club unilaterally postponed the match due to a severe squad flu outbreak, but the Premier League ruled the failure to field a team was unauthorised, causing Middlesbrough's ultimate relegation by a single point.
