Premier League have a blank page when it comes to punishing Man City after guilty verdict

The news the football world has been waiting for has finally been delivered, with news emerging that Manchester City have been found guilty of financial breaches by the Premier League .

Manchester City were charged by the Premier League in 2023, accused of 115 financial breaches from 2009 to 2018, as well as being charged with failing to co-operate with Premier League investigations into their finances. The investigation initially began after German newspaper Der Spiegel published leaked financial documents from City in 2018.

The news was broken by the Athletic's David Ornstein on Friday afternoon that City had been found guilty of "almost all of the charges relating to breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations".

During the period of time in which the financial breaches were made, City won the Premier League three times, the FA Cup twice and the League Cup four times, with the claim to all of those trophies now thrown into serious doubt.

Financial breaches in other instances have almost always led to a points' deduction, with both Everton and Nottingham Forest seeing four points chalked off their total during the 2023/24 season for breaching the Premier League's financial rules.

The charges levelled at City were bigger than any that have gone before, so what will the sanctions be for Enzo Maresca's side? It has been claimed that City could be stripped of the titles they won during the period in question, while there has even been talk of the club being relegated or even expelled from the league.

Possible punishments:

It is unknown what exactly the punishment will be because it has never been put in writing how clubs would be punished if they were to breach financial rules.

The Premier League does not have set sanctions for breaches because there were fears that if clubs were made aware of the punishments, they could simply break the rules and take the punishment if they knew what it was and deemed it satisfactory enough to accept. In essence it means that anything is possible should the Premier League see fit.

City have always vehemently denied the charges, saying in 2023:

> "Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with. > > “The club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position. As such we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.”

A source with insider knowledge has revealed when revealed when the case is expected to be closed.
