Man Utd have got the green light to sign Crystal Palace star Tyrick Mitchell as a replacement for Luke Shaw.
Manchester United have been given the green light to pursue a move for Crystal Palace star Tyrick Mitchell as a replacement for Luke Shaw.
The Red Devils were keen to bring in a new left-back in the summer window, having completed a midfield rebuild with the arrivals of Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Carlos Baleba, but they didn't get a deal over the line before the deadline passed.
United made Lewis Hall their top target, but Newcastle had no interest in selling, while the club also made a late move for Man City defender Rayan Ait-Nouri on loan, but it was rejected.
INEOS and Michael Carrick retain an interest in Hall heading into 2027, but after he just signed a new long-term contract at St James' Park, a deal looks complicated and is unlikely to be revisited until next summer at the earliest.
But with Luke Shaw out of contract at the end of the season, and struggling with injury issues once again, the club must look at potential alternatives during the January window. That has seen them take a look at Eagles star Mitchell.
The Selhurst Park star has been a regular on the left-hand side of their defence in recent years, and was a key part of Oliver Glasner's squad which won the FA Cup, Community Shield and UEFA Conference League in a 12-month period.
Man Utd are keen to bolster the squad, and according to a report by Football Insider , Mitchell has emerged as a target after it was revealed that he would be extremely keen on a move to Old Trafford.
The 27-year-old would like to play Champions League football, and Man Utd see him as someone who could come in and compete with Shaw in the short-term before eventually becoming first choice.
It's believed that Mitchell would find it 'very difficult to turn down an offer', and United could now potentially make a move to bring him in.
While United are desperate for a new left-back to join the club and help them, Mitchell cannot be the long-term answer to the position for the club.
With Shaw looking more likely to leave the club at the end of his contract rather than sign a new deal, two left-back options are likely to be needed, and if the board want the team to be successful, then they need to be of a certain level.
Jean-Philippe Mateta has been a big fan of his teammate at Palace, describing him as a 'machine' last season .
> "I'm always happy when he finds me in the box. He is my guy, I've been with him for a few years now. He is a fantastic team-mate and a machine."
Hall fits the bill perfectly for first-choice left-back, and Mitchell would be excellent competition and depth for both Shaw and Hall. But if United view him to be the long-term option, that would be a sideways move and one that should probably be avoided.
