Millwall vs West Ham: Taty Castellanos Accused of Spitting at Goalkeeper
· GiveMeSport
West Ham striker Taty Castellanos was the subject of a strong accusation against Millwall and now faces a nervous wait.
The Dockers Derby between Millwall and West Ham ended 2-2 as the Hammers fought back from two goals down. Millwall dominated the first half, with goals from Caleb Taylor and Camiel Neghli, both from throw-ins.
Following the interval, Nuno Espírito Santo's side came out stronger, with goals from substitute Mohamadou Kante and Konstantinos Mavropanos levelling the score. Kante was sent off in the later stages of the game after pulling back Millwall attacker Kyrell Lisbie, who was through on goal.
The derby was well anticipated, as it was the first time the sides had met since 2012, and tempers flared, with Millwall lodging an official complaint against West Ham attacker Taty Castellanos.
The incident in question happened in the 65th minute, when Millwall goalkeeper Filip Marschall held onto the ball in his hands for longer than the six seconds permitted in the rules, prompting the referee's whistle.
West Ham, who were looking to get themselves back into the game, assumed that they had been awarded a corner due to Marschall's antics, and took a short corner which striker Pablo rolled into the net.
However, Paul Tierney had not given a corner and instead called both captains to have a discussion. Marschall had alleged to Tierney that moments before, Castellanos had spat at the goalkeeper. This was all unbeknownst to fans inside the stadium, who were unsure as to why Marschall had held onto the ball for so long in the first place.
It was later confirmed by Millwall coaching staff that Marschall had held onto the ball as he was trying to make the point to the referee that Castellanos had committed this act. The incident had caused a minor melee in the penalty area, but not enough for the referee to be concerned.
According to Sky Sports, the fourth official as well as Millwall coaching staff confirmed an official complaint has been made about the incident involving Castellanos.
For many fans, it was unclear what was being suggested at the time by goalkeeper Filip Marschall, but it was later confirmed by Millwall manager Alex Neil that an official complaint had been lodged.
From the very depths of British football, there are some great rivalries to be seen...
In his press conference, Neil said: "Obviously I'm so far away so it's hard for me to see what happened, but I wouldn't presume Fil would say that without cause. I'm sure the referees and the authorities, whoever, will look at it and if it warrants that it needs dealt with, I'm sure it will."
On the other hand, Nuno Espirito Santo remained coy about the incident. He said: "I didn't see it, so I am not going to comment on it. That's not what we should be speaking about, this game, this game has much to speak about. It was a very intense game for both fans."
