Given the seriousness of the incident, the referee immediately activated the anti-racism protocol and stopped play to protect and support the Moroccan winger.
Formal warnings were issued to spectators over the stadium's public address system, making clear that any continuation of this intolerable behaviour would result in the match being abandoned.
After several tense minutes, and once the situation in the stands had calmed down, the referee allowed play to resume for the remainder of regulation time.
Such a shame that such a historic occasion for the home club should be marred by something like this.
