Viktor Gyokeres Slammed For 'Unforgivable' Display in Ipswich vs Arsenal
· GiveMeSport
Arsenal fans are convinced Viktor Gyokeres has no future at the club after his performance against Ipswich.
Arsenal claimed a spot in the fourth round of the EFL Cup with a dominant win over Premier League new boys Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Tuesday night.
The Gunners took an early lead as 17-year-old sensation Max Dowman slotted the ball past the goalkeeper following a brilliant bit of skill on the edge of the box, before Noni Madueke doubled the lead with a powerful half-volley into the corner. Dowman added a second two minutes into the second half, before Mikel Merino made it 4-0 before the hour mark.
Ipswich were able to pull two goals back through Anis Mehmedi and Chuba Akpom, but ultimately the reigning Champions and last season's finalists made it through with little concern.
But despite the victory, Arsenal fans were very critical of one player's performance after he struggled to make an impact, having been given his first start of the campaign.
Mikel Arteta decided to make several changes for the game after a packed start to the season, and that saw a number of stars getting their first starts of the season, including Dowman, Madueke, Merino, Martin Zubimendi, and Viktor Gyokeres.
But the Sweden international struggled heavily with his performance, notably missing a glaring chance to get on the scoresheet and being very poor with his passing, completing just 9/13 attempts over the entire 90 minutes.
With Kai Havertz starting the season in good form as the central striker, Gyokeres had a chance to stake his claim to win his starting spot back, having been the top scorer at the Emirates Stadium last season as they lifted the Premier League title and reached the Champions League and EFL Cup finals.
But after watching him against Ipswich, many Arsenal fans took to social media to blast him, with one even describing him as 'unforgivable'.
"A really bad performance from Gyökeres tonight," wrote @FKHanage.
"I have sympathy as he had a long season last year and perhaps he was told he would be going to Atletico in the summer. But even the basics; movement & desire to get involved weren’t there and that’s unforgivable. It’s a problem.
"Gyökeres just isn’t at the level," wrote another fan @HarveyDiamonds. "Simple as.
"The level at which he executes actions is Championship levels at best. His ball-striking bails his general play so much. We really can’t go on much longer with him as a real viable option at CF."
Despite only joining the club from Sporting CP 12 months ago and having a successful first season, @EduardoHagn stated that he felt a transfer needed to be explored by all parties in the January window as a result of his showing.
Arsenal will return to Premier League action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to the Amex Stadium against Brighton and Hove Albion, as they look to maintain their 100% start to the season before the international break.
