> “I was supportive last week of Lisandro Martinez playing. I thought it was handled well because there's no defender, the ones who are there aren't good enough and he got a public apology.

> “I don't think there is any way that Carrick can start Fernandes today. I've no idea if he is going to start but when I saw Carrick's face on Friday, you could see in his eyes he was going to embark on something that was going to bring this to a head. It was a horrible press conference to watch. It was very emotional.

> “There has to be a consequence, for Michael's own reputation. He's got to do it for himself. Fernandes has been a fantastic player for this club, he's been world-class at times. But there's been really blunt about it - he's played awfully this season. His standards have been really poor. It's a mess.”
