Real Madrid have suffered a late setback ahead of Sunday’s El Clasico against Barcelona, with Thibaut Courtois ruled out after falling ill with the flu.
The Belgian goalkeeper’s absence is expected to hand Andriy Lunin a starting role at the Spotify Camp Nou, placing the Ukrainian under immediate pressure in one of the biggest matches of the season.
For Lunin, the opportunity comes with an uncomfortable statistic hanging over him, as he has conceded eight goals across his four previous official meetings with Barcelona and has yet to keep a clean sheet against Madrid’s fiercest rivals.
Courtois absence puts Lunin in the spotlight
Courtois has been Real Madrid’s first-choice goalkeeper throughout the campaign, making his last-minute withdrawal a significant blow for Jose Mourinho’s side.
Lunin, meanwhile, has not played an official match this season, meaning Sunday’s encounter could be his first competitive appearance of the 2026-27 campaign.
The Ukrainian will therefore have little margin for error against a Barcelona side capable of punishing defensive mistakes.
With the match carrying major implications for the La Liga title race, his handling, positioning and composure under pressure could prove decisive.
Lunin’s previous Clasicos offer mixed memories
Lunin’s record against Barcelona began positively, as he featured in Real Madrid’s 3-1 victory at the Santiago Bernabeu in October 2022 before helping Los Blancos secure a 4-1 win in the Spanish Super Cup final in January 2024.
However, his subsequent meetings with Barça were more difficult. During Madrid’s 3-2 league victory in April 2024, Lunin misjudged his attempt to deal with a Raphinha corner, allowing Andreas Christensen to score Barcelona’s opening goal.
His most recent Clasico remains particularly painful. On October 26, 2024, Barcelona won 4-0 at the Bernabeu, with Robert Lewandowski scoring twice before Lamine Yamal and Raphinha completed the rout.
Lunin conceded four times that night, including Raphinha’s chipped finish late in the match.
Simply put, Lunin has registered three wins in four games against Barcelona, although he has conceded eight goals in those four games and has not kept a clean sheet.
Real Madrid need Lunin to deliver under pressure
The numbers make uncomfortable reading, but they do not automatically determine what happens next.
Lunin has previously demonstrated that he can perform at a high level, and a Clasico offers an opportunity to show he can be trusted when the stakes are highest.
Real Madrid’s defence must also help protect him. Barcelona’s movement and attacking quality will test the entire back line, not just the goalkeeper.
If Lunin is confirmed in the starting XI, Real Madrid will need him to be decisive when called upon rather than allowing his previous Clasico experiences to define his performance.
