Barcelona have received a significant boost ahead of tonight’s El Clasico . Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has been ruled out of the highly anticipated clash.

The Belgian’s unexpected absence leaves Jose Mourinho without his first-choice goalkeeper for the biggest match of their season so far.

Hansi Flick’s side will be looking to extend their six-point advantage over their biggest rivals and make it nine as early as October.

According to an official statement from Real Madrid , Courtois has been withdrawn from the squad after falling ill with the flu.

Courtois ruled out as Madrid make late squad change

The Spanish giants confirmed the news on Sunday, just hours before the two teams are scheduled to meet.

Madrid have called up young Ukrainian goalkeeper Illia Voloshyn to replace Courtois in the travelling squad.

However, Andriy Lunin appears the most likely replacement, having previously deputized for the Belgium international in important matches.

Madrid are already missing Vinicius Junior, who is ruled out of the fixture through suspension, and now Courtois has joined the list.

Losing two influential players ahead of such a demanding fixture is far from ideal for the visitors, particularly given Barcelona’s attacking quality.

Barcelona have an opportunity to exploit Courtois’ absence

Courtois is among Europe’s most accomplished goalkeepers, renowned for his reflexes, commanding presence and ability to produce decisive saves under pressure.

His absence removes a player capable of keeping Madrid competitive even when opponents create several clear chances.

Barcelona’s attacking trio of Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Anthony Gordon will now look to test Lunin at every opportunity.

The Catalans should also aim to maintain sustained attacking pressure, forcing the Ukraine international into difficult situations.

Raphinha, who is likely to start as the striker, will aim to apply pressure through his pressing and test Lunin’s footwork.

However, Barcelona cannot assume that Courtois’ absence guarantees an advantage going into the game.

Lunin is already experienced and has played at the highest level before. He is unlikely to be fazed by the atmosphere at the Camp Nou .

Ultimately, Barcelona’s aim in the game is to take the three points and go nine points clear of Los Blancos .

Courtois’ absence is a microadvantage that Barcelona could look to exploit, and it remains to be seen how it affects the game tonight.
