Jadon Sancho given crushing reality check with contract offer after Man Utd and Chelsea flops
· Mirror
Jadon Sancho's contract with Manchester United expired this summer, with the winger remaining a free agent since - but that could soon change
Manchester United flop Jadon Sancho has been handed a contract offer of around £10,000-per-week by Getafe as he searches for his next club. The 26-year-old may have excelled with Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga during his early years as a professional, but fell well short of expectations at Old Trafford.
United brought in the winger in a £73million deal in 2021, but to say that the Camberwell-born player underwhelmed would be putting it mildly. Sancho mustered just three goals and three assists in his first campaign on English shores, before recording six and three in 26 games throughout 2022/23.
Sancho ended up heading back to Dortmund on loan the following season, but was ultimately unable to recapture his earlier form in the Bundesliga. A further loan switch to Chelsea followed in 2024/25, with the west London outfit holding a £25m obligation to sign him permanently the next summer.
Following a disappointing stint in the capital, Chelsea chose not to proceed, instead paying a £5m penalty to return Sancho to Greater Manchester. Another season-long loan to Aston Villa then came Sancho's way last term, with the Villans showing no interest in securing the player at its conclusion.
Consequently, Sancho was let go by United this summer, and has been without a club ever since. That situation could soon alter, though, with several sides reportedly interested in handing the versatile attacker a deal.
Matching the eye-watering £250,000-per-week he is understood to have earned during his spell at Manchester United, however, appears highly improbable. According to the Telegraph, Getafe have tabled a deal running until the end of the season, proposing to pay him just £10,000-per-week.
While Sancho has not completely dismissed a switch to the La Liga outfit, it is understood that he wants to hold talks with head coach Jose Bordalas before reaching a verdict on the proposal.
At present, Getafe occupy 15th place in the Spanish top division, having secured just two victories from their first nine fixtures of the season.
Bordalas has also endured a challenging period with the club recently. Brought in during 2023, 'Pepe' has openly criticised Getafe's leadership this term over insufficient squad resources.
This comes despite him having previously expressed doubts about his first-team's capacity to perform at the elite level every three days - with both La Liga and Conference League commitments to juggle.
> He told the media: "I feel deceived because what has been promised year after year hasn't been fulfilled. I'm angry. I've been warning about this since May, that it was going to be a very difficult season with matches every three days. It's been proven that we don't have the squad for it."
> Club president Angel Torres has now fired back, making it clear the manager is free to walk away should he wish. Speaking to Cadena SER, Torres said: "He signed because he wanted to. Anyway, he's free to leave. If we're so bad, what can we do? This is Getafe.
> "What I don't understand is what you're doing here if you're unhappy and I already knew it. To say that I deceived him...you have to be as shameless as stone to tell me, after 30 years, that I deceived him. But well, what he needs to do is respect the players, just as the players respect him."
