Man Utd Reach Michael Carrick Sack Verdict After Como Defeat
· GiveMeSport
Manchester United are reportedly standing by Michael Carrick for the time being despite a 4-1 loss to Como.
Michael Carrick's future as Manchester United head coach has been thrown into further doubt following a 4-1 loss to Como and he wasn't spotted at their Carrington training ground as usual.
United's start to the season went from bad to worse after suffering a heavy defeat to Como in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night. Carrick 's side are now on a run of seven games without a win and have won just two of 11 games in all competitions.
To compound his woes, captain Bruno Fernandes appeared to turn on him after the game, calling out his choice of tactics. It's added more fuel to the fire and INEOS have reportedly made a decision over possibly sacking him.
Carrick is believed to still retain the support of the club's hierarchy, as The Telegraph claim that the club are standing by him. This Sunday's clash with Bournemouth in the Premier League is described as potentially being "decisive" in determining his immediate future.
INEOS handed Carrick the permanent job back in May after he secured Champions League qualification with a third-placed finish. He'd been placed in charge on a caretaker basis after Ruben Amorim's dismissal in January.
Carrick oversaw an impressive run of form during his interim spell, with his side winning 11 of 16 matches. That included wins over Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool along with performances that suggested he could be the long-term solution.
There is said to be an argument for him to be given until the mid-November international break to try and turn things around. If the club decide to make a change, the thinking is that a "bigger name" and "stronger personality" is required to take the reins at Old Trafford.
Carrick's tactics have particularly frustrated not just Fernandes but the higher-ups with the suggestion that this is leading to a lack of intensity and pressing. This has been identified as a "failing this season" and is another issue that he and assistant Steve Holland are faced with.
Carrick's lack of appearance at Carrington at around 7.30am raised alarm bells on the morning after the Como defeat. Samuel Luckhurst reported that there was no sign of him at the club's training facility on Thursday morning while his players are given the day off.
Luckhurst pointed out that some players and staff tried to hide from photographers at Manchester Airport. This comes after Fernandes' comments about Carrick's tactics and a viral clip which surfaced where the Portuguese midfielder told fans he wasn't allowed to speak.
The uncertainty over Carrick's future has led to talk of United sounding out possible replacements and one of those is Julian Nagelsmann. The German is out of management after being sacked by the Germany national team following the World Cup.
Antonio Conte and Fabian Hurzeler are among a list of names reportedly on INEOS' radar . Carrick needs to quickly turn things around starting with Bournemouth's visit to Old Trafford this weekend and defeat to the Cherries might give the co-owners no choice but to make a change.
